Myth: The influenza vaccine doesn’t work. I still get the flu.
Fact: Tons of viruses can cause flu-like symptoms at any time during the year, but those are not actually the influenza virus. The flu shot protects you against influenza strains that health experts predict will cause illness during flu season. Because influenza virus strains vary each year, it’s important to get vaccinated every flu season.

Leading a healthy lifestyle can have so many benefits to your health as well as prevent you from catching the flu. It can be challenging to take care of your well-being, especially during the busy parts of the semester. Here are some ways you can practice self-care:
- Get plenty of sleep (7-9 hours is best)
- Be physically active
- Stay hydrated (9-13 cups of water)
- Eat healthy and nutritious foods (remember to treat yourself as well!)
- Manage your stress - uni can get pretty busy, but remember to reach out for support when you need it!
- Do something you love - What makes you excited to get up in the morning?

Myth: The influenza vaccine can give me the flu.
Fact: The inactivated influenza vaccine (injection) will not give you the flu because it contains only killed viruses that cannot cause infection. The live attenuated influenza vaccine (nasal spray) contains weakened influenza viruses that can give you mild symptoms such as a runny nose or sore throat but will not cause influenza.

Washing your hands is one of the easiest ways for you to protect yourself from the flu. Wet, lather, scrub, rinse and dry your hands to keep them germ-free. Remember that soap and warm water is best, but if unavailable, an alcohol-based hand sanitizer works well too.
Visit our table this Wednesday, Nov 14 (12:30-2:30) near the Women’s Centre and West Mall Centre at SFU Burnaby to find out how well YOU wash your hands!
