Congratulations to BCIT Broadcast and Online Journalism alumnus Tchadas Leo on being named a 2026 recipient of the Lieutenant Governor’s BC Journalism Fellowship.
The prestigious fellowship supports ambitious, in-depth public interest journalism across British Columbia, providing recipients with funding to pursue impactful investigative reporting projects. Tchadas’ fellowship project will explore how aging infrastructure, climate vulnerability, and limited emergency access affect remote First Nations communities across the province.
We are proud to see BCIT alumni continuing to elevate important stories, amplify underrepresented voices, and make meaningful contributions to journalism and communities throughout B.C.

Alumni Spotlight: Sam Bienias
From BCIT Diagnostic Medical Sonography graduate and valedictorian to Ultrasound Supervisor at Vernon Radiological Associates, Sam Bienias has built a career rooted in compassion, curiosity, and care. Her love for working with people and fascination with the human body led her to a profession where she gets to make a meaningful difference in patients' lives every day.
Sam continues to stay connected by acting as a clinical liaison for BCIT and CNC students through their clinical rotations, Sam's career has taken her across Canada and overseas to New Zealand. When she's not at work, you'll find her hiking and running with her dog Hank, biking, skiing, playing volleyball, or spending time by the lake in the Okanagan.
Sam's journey reflects the heart of sonography, a profession for "artists and detectives alike" where authenticity, attention to detail, and genuine care for patients make all the difference.

Alumni Spotlight: Nahomy Castillo
From architecture studies in Peru to building a career in Canada, Nahomy Castillo followed her curiosity about how buildings perform and found her path through BCIT’s Building Science program. Today, she is an acoustical consultant at BKL Consultants Ltd., applying her technical knowledge to create more comfortable and functional spaces.
Through her work, Nahomy contributes to improving everyday environments by enhancing sound conditions in buildings, directly impacting people’s comfort and quality of life. Her journey reflects the value of persistence, continuous learning, and applying education in meaningful ways beyond the classroom.
