Title: My Family
Artist: H. T.
I had so much fun watching H drawing and painting his family. He was humorous, funny, observant, creative and delighted during the process. He studied his family’s picture and referred to it back and forth, as drawing the lines on the canvas. At the end of his drawing, he reviewed each character and exclaimed with excitement that he drew his mommy a cat face, a belly on his daddy’s tummy. He pointed out the extensive curve lines of his sister’s funny hair and his brother’s smiling eyes. He gave each of his family member unique and lively characteristics. After that, he decided to use multiple colours on each family character to show it’s a “rainbow family”. 🌈

As the children learned to identify their own emotions, they showed a great interest in the colors and the individual meaning of each emotion as related to the colors. Thus the children were encouraged to draw the colors they feel, as though the color monster in the book.

Katherine: “S, do you have a girlfriend?”
S: “Yes.”
Katherine: “What’s her name? What does she look like?”
S: “Her name is L. She has long hair. I have a crush on her, and she has a crush on me.”
Katherine: “How do you know you had a crush on her?”
S: “When your body get closer, then you know..”❤️

Big questions from young kids are hard. The balance between dismissing or overwhelming with too-grown-up answers is hard to navigate. Here's a north star to follow: most kids aren't looking for facts and forecasting, they are looking for safety.
We can soothe kids AND help build resilience to future adversity when our responses to these questions highlight strength, identity, and relationships- kinda like this otter mom who isn't dismissive or toxically positivity, but helps little otter know that they are in a family that will keep them safe and support them even through really hard things.
