What does mental health mean to you: To me, mental health means being able to cope with and adapt to life’s daily stresses and struggles. It means demonstrating resiliency and perspective. Mental health does not mean reacting idealistically to every situation or experiencing only positive emotions. Instead, it means understanding that overwhelming emotions and circumstances are transient, and that we all have intrinsic strengths which help us to overcome these challenges.

Name: Miranda

Executive Role: Vice-President

Program and Year: Computer Systems Technology, 2nd Year

What does mental health mean to you: The resources and knowledge around mental health in our community are not sufficient for the impact our mental wellness has on our well-being. Mental health impacts everyone, whether one has an mental illness or not. Especially at BCIT, we need more awareness and knowledge about mental health. Our heavy course load leads to a lack of self care, which is so, so important! To me, mental health is something I have struggled with for most of my life. I've only recently learned how to cope which has had made a world of difference for me. :)

What does mental health mean to you: Mental health is an important aspect of everyone’s well-being and greatly affects an individual’s ability to deal with the stresses that we encounter on a day to day basis. Mental health refers to more than just mental illness and I believe that it is a critical aspect to emphasis since self care and development of coping strategies are key components to maintaining good mental health.
