At North Rd, we strive to provide a positive nurturing environment, where children can develop and enhance their intellectual, emotional, spiritual and physical needs. Children choose where in the classroom they want to work and move about freely, choosing activities. Students use and manipulate materials that appeal to the senses, is purposeful in nature, and practice real life experiences. The materials are self-teaching and through practice and repetition of these materials and activities, the children develop concentration and master their work. Multiple age groups help the children to learn from each other while practicing to become leaders. Children become academically prepared by working with materials in the areas of Math, Language, Geography and Culture. Children learn to value and respect each other in a safe, child-friendly environment that prepares to help them learn not only about their, body, mind and spirit but also embracing family, community and environment.

The children have been fascinated by the leaves changing colors. For circle we read an interesting book by Betsey Maestro 'Why do leaves chance colors.' The key points: why do leaves need to grow,? What gives the leaf it's green color? Vocabulary: chlorophyll, pigment

During our walks we observe the different varieties of trees in our neighbourhood and try to identify the trees by their leaves (oak, red maple, aspen, birch etc)
The children enjoy collecting leaves and are learnig to name the parts of a leaf(Apex, midrib, veins, blade, petiole and stipule)

The next time you go for a walk try and name the beautiful leaves!

At North Rd Montessori we strive to provide a learning environment where children learn through the materials provided for their developmental growth. The Materials are child size, colourful and interesting. The children learn with confidence and a sense of belonging. The areas of Practical Life, Sensorial, Math , Language, Geography and Cultural help the child expand their knowledge and feel comfortable in the world around them. Free time and outside play time allows children to become more social and creative and build healthy bodies and minds.
