Injured Workers’ Day in Canada brings attention to the struggle and injustice that injured workers and their families face, and to call for change.

On June 1, 1983, over 3,000 marchers converged on the steps of the Ontario Legislature, and successfully demanded a voice for injured workers in committee meetings about changes to Ontario’s workers’ compensation system. In 2008, the Canadian Labour Congress adopted a resolution to proclaim June 1 “a Canada-wide day of action to intensify the struggle for justice for all injured workers.”

On April 24, workers and trade unions in Bangladesh and around the world mark the anniversary of the collapse of the Rana Plaza building in Dhaka, Bangladesh, in memory of over 3,000 workers affected by the collapse and to ensure it never happens again.

Last November, Bangladesh became the first Asian country to ratify all 11 ILO fundamental instruments. Workers and unions are calling for the implementation of these standards, in particular the core conventions on health and safety C187, C155, as well as C121, the Employment and Injury Benefits Convention and C190, the Violence and Harassment Convention.
