I Love Taiwanese Night Market Games!
TCML Parent-Child Mandarin Program Brings the Night Market Into the Classroom

Parent-Child Mandarin · Taiwanese Night Market Games · Bingo Character Challenge · Red vs. White Team Competition

The TCML Parent-Child Mandarin Program held Week 3 on June 7th at Tommy Douglas Public Library to a lively and enthusiastic room. This week's theme, "I Love Taiwanese Night Market Games," saw Teacher Angel bring the beloved culture of Taiwan's night markets right into the classroom — turning the learning space into a bustling mini night market full of cheers, laughter, and friendly competition.

To open the session, Teacher Angel took on the role of a night market tour guide, introducing families to the most iconic traditional games found at Taiwanese night markets: ring toss (套圈圈), marble shooting (打彈珠), and sandbag throwing (擲沙包). Through hands-on props, lively explanations, and interactive Q&A, children and parents alike discovered the charm of night market culture while picking up the relevant Mandarin vocabulary. The classroom instantly transformed into a vibrant little night market, with eager hands raised and voices buzzing.

Before the main challenge rounds began, participants warmed up with the "Mandarin Bingo Character Challenge" (中文認字賓果大挑戰). Families were divided into the Red Team and the White Team, competing to complete bingo lines through listening, reading, and character-matching activities. Every time a team completed a line, the room erupted in cheers and applause. Children were fully focused and engaged — unknowingly recognizing a whole range of Chinese characters simply by playing the game. Winning teams and all participating families received lovely prizes, and every face beamed with a sense of accomplishment.

Then came the most eagerly anticipated part of the day: the "Red vs. White Night Market Games Challenge" (紅白夜市遊戲大挑戰)!

Round 1 — Sandbag Mandarin Throw (擲沙包中文挑戰賽)
Participants took turns tossing sandbags onto a target zone and reading aloud the Chinese character where the bag landed. Every child was eager to step up and take on the challenge. When a character was successfully read, teammates burst into applause and cheers — the atmosphere was electric and full of joy.

Round 2 — Marble Shooting Masters (打彈珠高手爭霸戰)
Next up was the classic marble shooting game. Participants carefully aimed and controlled their force to guide marbles into the winning holes. Every successful score brought a wave of excitement from the crowd, with adults and children alike cheering loudly for their teammates. This beloved Taiwanese night market game gave everyone not only a taste of traditional culture, but also a chance to develop focus, patience, and a spirit of perseverance.

Round 3 — Ring Toss Mandarin King Challenge (套圈圈中文王挑戰)
The grand finale was the crowd-favorite ring toss game. Before each toss, participants had to correctly read a Chinese character aloud to earn their turn. Children called out characters confidently while concentrating on landing their rings on the target. Every successful toss brought beaming smiles and a surge of pride — to both children and parents. This activity not only gave learners repeated practice with character recognition, but also built hand-eye coordination, making Mandarin learning feel exciting and rewarding.

After three thrilling rounds of competition, both the Red and White Teams demonstrated outstanding teamwork and enthusiasm for learning. Regardless of the final score, every participant received a prize, and everyone left with a big smile and a heart full of wonderful memories from their "night market cultural journey."

Week 3 successfully wove Taiwanese night market culture and Mandarin learning together through gamified teaching, empowering families to strengthen their character recognition skills while sharing in the unique spirit of Taiwanese culture.

At the close of the session, TCML Executive Director Shirley Wang warmly thanked all parents and children for their enthusiastic participation, and offered a preview of the exciting activities coming next week. Everyone is welcome to keep joining TCML's Parent-Child Mandarin Program — where we learn Mandarin with joy, explore Taiwanese culture together, and create even more beautiful parent-child memories!

Step into the Night Market! TCML Parent-Child Mandarin Program Explores Taiwanese Street Food & Shopping Culture

Parent-Child Mandarin · Taiwanese Night Market Culture · Clay Craft · Situational Role Play

TCML@Union Mandarin School held Week 2 of its Parent-Child Mandarin and Cultural Crafts Program on May 31st at Tommy Douglas Library. Led by TCML Teacher Angel, families were transported into the vibrant and colorful world of Taiwanese night market culture.

The workshop began with welcoming remarks from TCML Executive Director Shirley Wang, who shared the mission of the Taiwan Center for Mandarin Learning (TCML). She explained that TCML's goal is not only to teach Mandarin, but also to introduce families to Taiwanese culture through language, cultural experiences, and meaningful community connections. She emphasized that language learning is most effective when it is engaging, interactive, and enjoyable. Through hands-on activities, storytelling, and family participation, children and parents can experience both the beauty of Mandarin and the richness of Taiwanese culture. She also encouraged families to continue participating in future TCML programs and to share these valuable community resources with more friends, neighbors, and classmates.

To begin the lesson, Teacher Angel delivered an engaging and lively introduction to Taiwanese night markets — their unique atmosphere, must-try street foods, and cultural significance — making children and parents alike feel as though they were strolling through the bustling stalls. The session then moved into an exciting Matching Game and a prize quiz, where the room buzzed with energy as children enthusiastically raised their hands to answer questions, picking up Mandarin vocabulary and Taiwanese cultural knowledge through play.

During the craft session, families worked together to sculpt their own bubble tea cups out of air-dry clay. With imagination running wild, children crafted adorable and remarkably lifelike boba drinks — deepening their connection to one of Taiwan's most popular iconic beverages while enjoying the hands-on creative process.

One of the highlights of the workshop was the Taiwanese Night Market Role-Play activity designed by Angel. Each participant received a simulated Taiwanese NT$100 paper money and became a customer visiting a night market stall. They practiced how to purchase items in Mandarin. Clutching their "hundred-dollar bills," the children cheerfully called out to Teacher Angel: "我要買一支糖葫蘆! (I'd like to buy a candied hawthorn skewer!)" Through this immersive simulation, students naturally developed their speaking skills and gained confidence using Mandarin in real-life situations. As a reward for completing the activity, every participant received a real candied hawthorn skewer prepared by Teacher Angel, getting a true taste of night market shopping and snacking.

Through this engaging and educational workshop, participating families not only learned Mandarin but also gained a deeper understanding of Taiwanese night market culture, popular street foods, and useful shopping expressions. It was a joyful and memorable Sunday filled with learning, creativity, and cultural discovery. We look forward to welcoming everyone back for next week's adventure!
