-Before Outlander: Remembering the Jacobites in Scottish History

The Jacobites have inspired centuries of stories, including Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series, but who were they really? Drawing on letters and firsthand accounts, Professor Davis will explore this fascinating chapter of Scottish history.

Accompanying the talk, members of the Sybaritic Scots will bring the story to life through traditional music, weaving together words and melodies that echo through Scotland’s hills and glens.

Post-medieval Scottish society greatly valued morality and maintaining the social order and traditional gender roles. Thus, Scottish women who threatened the status quo could find themselves on the wrong side of the law. Accusations of witchcraft and infanticide were most common charges brought against women during the Stuart era.

It is with great sadness that we announce the recent passing of Rex Davidson, a long-time friend and affiliate of the Research Centre for Scottish Studies and a past president of the St. Andrews and Caledonian Society of Vancouver. We will all greatly miss Rex's passion and enthusiasm for all things Scottish, his wisdom and his gentle humour. Our thoughts go out to his family and loved ones at this time.

Six FASS researchers awarded SSHRC Insight Grants 07/21/2026

Congratulations to our director, Professor Leith Davis, who has received a SSHRC Insight Grant to pursue her research on Forms of Memory in the British Transatlantic World, 1700-1840. Check out this article to learn more about Professor Davis' work, and that of the other SSHRC Insight Grant recipients.

Six FASS researchers awarded SSHRC Insight Grants From the study of 18th century manuscripts to government debt to biases in the criminal justice system, nine researchers from FASS have been awarded SSHRC Insight Grants to pursue research in these topics and many more.

Our director, Professor Leith Davis, recently visited the University of Exeter's Cornwall campus in Penryn to develop collaborations with the Institute for Cornish Studies and the Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences.

On this day in 1515, Mary of Guise (Marie de Guise) was born. Famously known as the mother of Mary, Queen of Scots and the wife of James V of Scotland, Mary of Guise had an eventful life of her own.
For example, did you know she dismissed a marriage proposal by Henry VIII saying, "I may be a big woman, but I have a very little neck." She was, indeed, very tall -- standing at almost 6 feet.
