Iβm truly honoured to have the opportunity to do the announcing for the Nelson Lords Senior Football Team again this season!!!
One of the things that has impressed me most is the incredible level of support surrounding this program. The families, the neighbourhood, the school, and especially the students all bring an energy that makes high school football something special. Seeing the stands filled, hearing the cheers, and watching the school spirit on display is a reminder of what high school sports can mean to an entire community.
Over the past few years, we have seen a number of high schools across Halton step away from their football programs, and I find that incredibly disappointing.
Football has always been a big tent sport.
There is a place for the fast athletes, the big athletes, the not so big athletes, the powerful, the agile, and the players who simply want to work hard, learn the game, and be part of something bigger than themselves. Few sports offer so many different roles for so many different body types and athletic abilities.
That is one of the things I love most about football. It truly is the epitome of a team sport.
Every player has a job. Every position matters. Success only comes when everyone works together.
I also have tremendous respect for the student athletes themselves. They put in countless hours at practices, games, meetings, and training sessions while still maintaining their academic responsibilities. The same goes for the coaches, who dedicate an enormous amount of time and energy to teaching the game, developing young athletes, and building a team culture these students will remember long after high school.
And then there is the student body.
The school spirit shown by Nelson students has been outstanding. The cheering, the enthusiasm, and the support they show their classmates adds so much to the experience.
High school football is about much more than what happens between the sidelines. It is about teamwork, discipline, commitment, friendship, school pride, and community.
Iβm proud and very fortunate to have a small part in it.
Go Lords!
