How Chess Moves Are Classified
Chess moves are often classified according to how strongly they affect the position. Chess websites such as Chess.com use computer engines to compare a player’s move with the best available move.
A Brilliant move is an exceptionally strong and difficult move, often involving a well-calculated sacrifice.
A Great move is a critical decision that may be the only way to save the game or gain a decisive advantage.
The Best move is the engine’s preferred choice.
An Excellent move is nearly as strong as the best move.
A Good move is solid and reasonable but may not be completely accurate.
A Book move is a recognized opening move found in established theory. It does not necessarily mean that the move is the strongest possible choice.
Negative classifications indicate that a move weakened the player’s position.
An Inaccuracy causes a small disadvantage, a Mistake creates a more serious problem, and a Blunder is a major error that may lose material or the game.
A Miss occurs when a player fails to take advantage of an important opportunity.
These classifications are useful for studying games, but they should not be treated as absolute judgments. A move marked “Good” may still be the most practical choice for a human player, while a computer’s preferred move may be extremely difficult to find or play.

Bulgaria’s Women’s team for Samarkand
Bulgaria’s women’s team heads into the 2026 Chess Olympiad in Samarkand with one of its most recognizable lineups in recent years. IM Nurgyul Salimova leads the squad on board one, supported by a strong core of WGM Nadya Toncheva, WGM Beloslava Krasteva, WGM Gabriela Antova, and FM Gergana Peycheva.
The team combines youth, experience, and solid international pedigree, with Salimova once again carrying much of the spotlight as Bulgaria looks to make a statement in the Women’s section. With five players on the roster, captain G. Petar Arnaudov has depth and flexibility for the 11-round event in Uzbekistan.
