Dear FKES Families,

Thank you to all of our parents, students, and families who joined us for Open House last night!

It was so great to see our hallways filled with smiling, happy kids and families again. It has been a long summer without the energy and excitement our students bring to the building—and last night was a wonderful reminder of just how infectious that excitement can be!

There were smiles, hugs, conversations with teachers, visits with old friends, and plenty of excitement about the year ahead. Seeing our students back in the building made FKES feel like FKES again.

Thank you for taking the time to come in, meet our staff, visit classrooms, and help us kick off the 2026–2027 school year on such a positive note.

Now we’re ready for the best part...

Dear FKES Families,

I wanted to make you aware of a new Maine law regarding cell phones and other personal electronic devices in schools. The new law calls for a “bell-to-bell” ban, which means students may not use these devices from the first bell of the day until the last bell.

This will not be a major change for students at FKES because we already had a School Board policy prohibiting cell phones and personal electronic devices during the school day. The new law reinforces that policy and makes it clear that the restriction also includes smartwatches, Bluetooth earbuds, headphones, and other personal electronic devices.

These devices must be turned off and kept put away for the entire school day, including during class, lunch, recess, and transitions. If your child does not need to bring a device to school, we strongly encourage leaving it at home.

Exceptions will only be made for students who need a device as part of an IEP, 504 Plan, individualized health care plan, or another legally required accommodation.

If you need to reach your child during the school day, please call the school office at 207-834-3456, and we will make sure they receive the message. Students who need to contact home will also be able to do so through the office.

Again, this does not change very much for us at FKES. It is simply a good opportunity to remind everyone of the expectations already in place. We appreciate your help by reviewing them with your child before the start of the school year.
