This is the best over view of why we may have issues with clutter. Worthy of a share here and loved how real she was about sharing how her own issues connect to these behaviours and patterns.

For NPE awareness month I am sharing some books that I have found helpful to read during the first year I was working through finding out my father that raised me was not my biological father. I put an asterisk beside the ones I read in the NPE book club I belong to.
An NPE could be the result of an affair, a donor conceived person, a late discovery adoptee.
Some NPEs were told someone else was their father and not their birth certificate father at some point in their life and then find out after doing dna that this person was also not their father. Some are also conceived from an assault abuse or some type of non consensual s*x.
The last group are books I have on my reading list
Inheritance by Dani Shapiro
The Lost Family by Libby Copeland
The Stranger in my Genes by Bill Griffeth
*NPE a Storyguide for unexpected DNA discoveries by Leeanne R Hay
*Folksong by Cory Goodrich
*The Milkman’s Son Randy Lindsey
*A Broken Tree by Stephen Anderson
* I had my underwear on the entire time by Michael & Amy Blair
Finding Family by Richard Hill
Journal for NPE’s -
Who Even Am I Anymore by Eve Sturges
Other helpful books I am currently reading ~
( I would recommend you work with a therapist while using Mark’s book to get the best experience):
It didn’t start with you by Mark Wolynn
The body keeps score by Besser Van der Kolk
On my reading list
Uprooted by Peter Boni about Donor Conceived NPEs and research
The Girls that went away by Ann Fessler about women who gave up children for adoption
I will add more books as they become available or I am made aware. I will share my story one day is well and may self publish.

The first of many NPE books I will be featuring this month. It is NPE Awareness Month.
As many of us who had a Non Paternal Event or Not Parent Expected happen from a commercial DNA test and wished we had a handbook to help us cope. Well Leeanne R Hay created one. It is fantastic. She not only shares her own story she weaves it brilliantly around tools and resources and validation for how a person experiencing an NPE may be feeling. It includes sample letters to send to newly found family, the stages of grief and how that impacts our discovery and opened me up to the concept of the unthought known. For many but not all of us their was always this sense we didn’t fit in. Some NPEs didn’t feel they fit in their families maybe due to looking different or just being very different with personality and attributes.
For me it was different I felt fine within my own family but felt I didn’t fit in anywhere in the world with friends, at work, social events. Not mentioned in the book but at a NPE webinar yesterday the word; Monachposis
aken from the Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows (John Koenig), monachopsis is. The subtle but persistent feeling of being out of place, as maladapted to your surroundings as a seal on a beach…. unable to recognize the ambient roar of your intended habitat, in which you'd be fluidly, brilliantly, effortlessly at home.
Leeanne’s book is available on Amazon.
I am part of a NPE book club. We read Leanne’s book together and she came out for our last meeting for her book and did a Q&A session. She is a warm and caring presence in the community groups I am part of with her and forever grateful that she wrote this book.

I am really enjoying the interviews and lectures by Dr Gabor Mate from Vancouver and world renown Author. He specializes in trauma, healing ADHD and addictions. He puts a very holistic spin on all of it and the way he defines addiction isn’t just about substances it’s about compulsive repetitive behaviours that start by giving you good feelings but that are harmful to you and your life and you feel you can’t stop doing them. Including overspending overeating, over exercising etc. This is a long one but very interesting to see how he applies it to the interviewer.

So the book that I shared is taking some “interesting” twists & turns with referencing other types of healings and some heavier religious messaging. No criticism just not a complete fit for me but I am still reading and enjoying it , by filtering out what isn’t a match.
That being said I am still finding the straight content about positive affirmations and challenging your beliefs and setting positive beliefs about your body and weight can still be extracted from it.
My weight and body image workshop and it’s exercises do not go off into any of these alternatives. It focuses on getting to the root causes. Your beliefs, inherited beliefs, what you want to belief, positive affirmations and positive planning, self love and encouragement and dropping the strict diet programs or heavily restrict diet and exercise programs that put you in a guilt shame cycle. Working on -“towards” goals rather than- “away” from goals.
You will lose weight on many of those programs I have no doubt but you will keep “trimming the dandelions” and not digging out the roots to get to the deeper cause and effect to make lasting changes.
Interested in making lasting change ?

“The Only Diet There Is “
Well it’s been way too long since I have posted here. Going through my own “Covid working from home with a toddler experience” has had me in all my own “stuff”. A good coach knows when adding in anything else would just be too much so I took a pause from my work here. Working on balance is one of “my things” How are you all doing? Feel free to send me a message or reply here.
So the reason I am finally posting today...I am excited that I found this book recently that actually was written back in the 80s but is so relevant to the exact messages I was communicating in my workshops last year and that I was using in my own weight loss journey over the last 4 years.
My emotional comfort eating and “building safety” patterns have re-emerged. I have gained some weight back. I am well aware that I haven’t taken or found the time to express and relieve myself of my emotional buildup worries and toxins and the negative messages are slipping back in amongst all the positive messages I give myself each morning.
I am a bit sleep deprived this week and I honestly can’t even remember now where I heard this book mentioned but I ordered it last week and would love to share it with you.
If you want to read it and do the activities along with me please message me here or email me at [email protected] to join my new book club. I found it on Amazon for 18.99 I wasn’t able to find it for my ereader. If you can’t afford the book right now but still want to follow along with the activities? You can still join in at [email protected] or send me a private message with your email and I will share the newsletter and activities with you .
The book is titled “ The Only Diet There Is” by Sondra Ray.
Just like my workshop you won’t find any diet tips or recipes here and this is not about following the latest trend in dieting. This is about and for those interested in doing the deeper work. To get to the root of why you struggle with weight. Why you over eat or fixate on your diet and exercise programs and want to get out of this disappointing cycle. And work on positive reinforcements and strategies to change how you feel about yourself. Glancing forward into the book, It looks like there is a bit of a religious context and some ideas may be out of date so if certain things don’t fit for you change the words or update the context so that it works for you as I think the messages and activities are very helpful and relevant.
I look forward to sharing this experience with you 🙂. Wishing you health happiness and wellness.
