In case anyone finds this helpful:

When boundaries are predictable, children feel safe in the adults who lead them. This is the foundation of authoritative parenting.

Decades of developmental research show that consistent follow through, warm connection, and clear limits help children develop self regulation, smoother transitions, and long-term confidence.

Permissive patterns often come from a loving place, but when limits shift from moment to moment children become unsure of what to expect. Their nervous systems work harder, behavior escalates, and transitions become more difficult because the structure they rely on keeps moving.

A 2023 study found that children of permissive parents had more than five times greater odds of emotional difficulties and over seven times greater odds of hyperactivity compared to children of authoritative parents (LWW Journal of Pediatric Psychology, 2023).

This matters now more than ever as we're seeing more dysregulation, more overwhelm, and more challenging behavior in early childhood. While there are many reasons for modern-day challenges, many of these struggles can trace back to nervous systems that do not feel anchored, predictable, or supported by steady adult leadership. Children need warmth and responsiveness, and they also need boundaries that do not disappear the moment big feelings show up.

We are diving deeper into this in our upcoming webinar: The Rise of Behavior Problems in Early Childhood: Why more children are struggling and what actually supports them.

Live Wednesday, Dec 17 at 12PM EST - Replay included for everyone who signs up!
