My ten-year celebration of Nia dancing, celebrated with wonderful teachers and valuable friends. Photography courtesy of Cheryl Costello.
In preparation for the music choices the Nia instructors will make, it is my job to come up with a theme that will connect the songs. I have been thinking of this for days and I finally got it.
"Letting Go to Get it Back."
This phrase really resonates with me on my Nia journey and with many of my students. Here are some of the ways this applies to Nia:
Letting go of everyday routines to embrace creativity, movement, feelings, joy.
Letting go to get back to your authentic self.
Letting go to get back body sensations, body awareness.
Letting go to get back playfulness.
Letting go to get back a new community, new connections.
Letting go of control to get back the fun of learning and sometimes failing.
Letting go of not responding to music to find my rhythm.
We are all so busy with work and family. There never seems to be time to listen to that person who lives inside our heads, hinting that she longs to get back to being herself. How can we provide for her?
