This morning was our last Reading Club session before March Break, and one of those small moments happened that reminds us why culturally responsive teaching matters.

One of our students came in wearing her bonnet, and I told her how much I liked it and that I would wear mine next class (pending me doing me hair ๐Ÿ˜‚). Right away two other students jumped in saying they had bonnets too and wanted to wear theirs.

So before we started reading, they proudly put them on.

It might seem like a small thing, but moments like this matter.

Bonnets have a long history in Black culture. They are rooted in a history of resistance, where something once tied to oppression became a symbol of cultural expression, care, and pride. Today they are also simply part of everyday life and community.

When students see parts of their culture acknowledged and valued in learning spaces, something important happens. Walls come down. Students feel safe. They connect with each other.

That connection is powerful for learning.

Reading is not just about decoding words. It is also about belonging, confidence, and relationships. When students feel comfortable and seen, they are more willing to take risks, try new words, and grow as readers.

This morning our students bonded over something they all recognized from home and community.

And then they bonded over becoming better readers together.

Moments like that remind me that literacy is always about more than books.

Is your child guessing instead of reading?
- Looks at pictures before words
- Memorizes books quickly
- Avoids new texts

Guessing is a coping strategy, not a skill. Itโ€™s what kids do when decoding feels too hard.

The goal isnโ€™t to stop the guessing. The goal is to teach the skills that make guessing unnecessary.

When we review a reading program, we keep three things in mind:

1๏ธโƒฃ Is instruction explicit?
2๏ธโƒฃ Are skills taught in sequence?
3๏ธโƒฃ Is progress actually measured?

Even the best intentions can fall flat when one or more of these attributes are missing.

, save this as a quick gut-check.

Struggling readers donโ€™t need more worksheets. They need...

1) clear instruction,
2) time to practice,
3) to know what to look for.

Real progress starts when we understand how reading develops, not when we pile on worksheets.

Learning to read isn't just seeing letters or hearing sounds. It is a multi-sensory approach. There are levels to this.

Every ReadWell student receives a Literacy Kit to support hands-on learning at home.

Why?
Because the Science of Reading is clear: children learn to read best when they see, say, hear, and write sounds and letters. Writing and word-building strengthen brain connections, support fine motor skills, and make online learning actually stick.

Our Literacy Kits help students:
โœ” Practice phonics and sound-letter connections
โœ” Stay engaged during online sessions
โœ” Build confidence through hands-on learning
โœ” Turn screen time into real learning time

Online reading support should be active, not passive.
Thatโ€™s why we pair live instruction with tools students can touch, build, and use.

When it comes to encouraging a love of reading, both physical ๐—ฏ๐—ผ๐—ผ๐—ธ๐˜€ and ๐—ฒ-๐—ฏ๐—ผ๐—ผ๐—ธ๐˜€ have their place.

From turning pages to feeling the weight of the story, physical books give children a hands-on and distraction-free reading experience. They help build focus, strengthen memory, and make bedtime reading feel cozy and screen-free.

E-books, on the other hand, put an entire library in your childโ€™s hands wherever they go. With built-in read-aloud features, adjustable text, and easy access to new stories, e-books can make reading more flexible and affordable.

The truth is, thereโ€™s no โ€œrightโ€ choice. The best format is the one that keeps your child reading regularly and enjoying the journey.

Which does your child prefer? Comment โ€œ๐—•๐—ข๐—ข๐—žโ€ or โ€œ๐—˜-๐—•๐—ข๐—ข๐—žโ€ below!
