In other words....welcome to the inclusion bus :)

For three years, educators, administrators, support staff, parents and anyone else who wants, come together at the University of Okanagan to take a course in inclusive education. This page is for students of these courses (and anyone else who is interested) to share ideas, articles, websites, photos and other artifacts to keep us connected to our cause and each other in our quest to design our sch

Do you want to know what is better than ONE Outside Pin?! TWO OUTSIDE PINS!!!

Cathi Davis and Katie Jameson got to book end this incredible day of learning at the Inclusionary Practices Institute in Auburn, Washington this week. The feedback has been incredible (as are Katie’s photoshopping skills 😂👏)

if you are looking for real life and heartfelt stories of schools, classrooms AND families - there is no better combination than these two. They are both available for in person and virtual presentations and sessions in Canada, the US and beyond.

To learn more about Cathi and Katie (and how they can blow you away as a duo) check out their profiles at

Dr. Leyton Schnellert, one of my favourite humans. He is the perfect combination of grace, humility, integrity, patience, advocate, change maker, teacher, leader, learner, mentor, researcher…. And he’s funny!

We have learned so much from Leyton and watching him intentionally and strategically disrupt education makes you feel like anything is possible.

His vision centres students and families in ways that empower and heal, and we just don’t have enough of people like him in this world. He is a gift of a human, and we are so lucky to have him on this team.

Leyton has offered keynotes, workshops, and ongoing learning opportunities, both in person and virtually. Take a look at Leyton’s Outside Pin Profile to learn more!

My MOST favourite inclusive strategy are standards based and scaffolded learning continuums - but they are often misinterpreted as rubrics and misused in assessment and evaluation practices resulting in inadvertently hindering the barriers that they are designed to reduce.

And so my MOST favourite teaching day in EPSE 317 is when I get to show the teacher candidates the difference between continuums and rubrics, and how to use them, and create them in ways that maintain their integrity.

And my MOST favourite evidence of learning is when teacher candidates then reflect on their misunderstandings of learning continuums and start to critique their own practices in efforts to do different moving forward! THIS is learning!!!

The last 2 slides are such powerful pieces of evidence of learning of 2 teacher candidates who did exactly this. They were able to go back and annotate what they would change about continuums they had created during their practicum, and identify why some elements were problematic and not inclusive.

They recognized their learning, captured evidence of how their thinking changed, and justified their evidence in relation to a learning standard. No two students submitted the same evidence of this process! This is inclusive assessment!

Creating a course for 748 students in ways that reflect competency based planning, teaching, learning and assessment makes for a lot of moving parts! But when you see them learning and growing in ways that align to the research… you feel like there is just no other way to do this work! It is so possible.

Thank you to the 2 students were brave and allowed me to share their evidence, it takes courage to be vulnerable and humility to grow. They will be 2 of MANY incredible teachers entering this field. Look for them and listen to them. They have LOTS to share and we can all learn from them 👏

We did it! Our first Outside Pin conference!! 120 people made their way to our little island yesterday. It went so fast and we didn’t want it to end. What a gift of a day complete with the greatest baked potatoes of all time!

Our victory splash was hard to do but worth it… just like the work we are all trying to do.

Stay tuned for news about the next conference - we aim to offer this every year. A soul filling day that reminds us all how possible this is.

This group. This work. We did it.

Yesterday was our first Outside Pin Conference on Bowen Island. Prior to the day we spent the week at retreat connecting, laughing, healing, dreaming and realizing that we don’t have to do this work alone.

I’m so grateful ❤️ thank you friends.

We are so excited to welcome Cathi Davis to our Outside Pin Collective! I have heard Cathi’s name long before I got to meet her because of the work she is doing.

Over the last few days I have now also got to know her not just as a legend in the state of Washington and beyond, but as a deeply committed dreamer, ally, leader, advocate and inclusionist in every sense of the word.

I recognize that not many in education has seen inclusion done well. And much of my mission is to show people what’s possible. Cathi has taken what’s possible into her own hands and is showing us not just what’s possible … but what IS HAPPENING ALREADY!

Cathi is the principal who started Ruby Bridges Elementary. A gentle leader with an uncompromising vision, showing all of us how to do this work.

I’m deeply honoured to be learning from and with her. And that this is just the beginning of our journey.

Cathi, welcome to the team ❤️
