Outdoor play is a vital part of a happy, healthy childhood that brings with it a wide range of health, social, cognitive, and emotional benefits. Children in all cultures and of all ages and abilities are naturally curious and want to explore, experiment, and make sense of the world around them. These natural impulses are most fully expressed when children are outdoors and engaged in free play. At
Compass Kids Nature School, we practice emergent, inquiry based, child led learning. As playworkers, our job is to facilitate this exploration with just enough structure and inspiration to engage the children and allow their natural curiosity to flourish. Keeping children safe whilst allowing them the freedom of adventurous (risky) play is how we set the foundation for life- long learning and connection with the land and their own capabilities. Through our exploration of the elements in all seasons, the children will develop a healthy embrace of nature in all forms, and confidence in all weather. The use of tools and supplies such as ropes, sleds, tarps, hand tools and fire are included within reasonable adult-child ratios and age readiness to ensure safety is always a top priority. Craft supplies and other loose parts materials may also be used at the discretion of the educator to enhance the children's creative impulses. You can expect your child will have a fun-filled day exploring the natural world, making imaginative games, creating to their heart's content, and getting messy!
