Compass Kids Nature School

Compass Kids Nature School Welcome to Compass Kids Nature School at Camp Little Red, where we believe every child deserves space and time for free outdoor play.

Outdoor play is a vital part of a happy, healthy childhood that brings with it a wide range of health, social, cognitive, and emotional benefits. Children in all cultures and of all ages and abilities are naturally curious and want to explore, experiment, and make sense of the world around them. These natural impulses are most fully expressed when children are outdoors and engaged in free play. At

Compass Kids Nature School, we practice emergent, inquiry based, child led learning. As playworkers, our job is to facilitate this exploration with just enough structure and inspiration to engage the children and allow their natural curiosity to flourish. Keeping children safe whilst allowing them the freedom of adventurous (risky) play is how we set the foundation for life- long learning and connection with the land and their own capabilities. Through our exploration of the elements in all seasons, the children will develop a healthy embrace of nature in all forms, and confidence in all weather. The use of tools and supplies such as ropes, sleds, tarps, hand tools and fire are included within reasonable adult-child ratios and age readiness to ensure safety is always a top priority. Craft supplies and other loose parts materials may also be used at the discretion of the educator to enhance the children's creative impulses. You can expect your child will have a fun-filled day exploring the natural world, making imaginative games, creating to their heart's content, and getting messy! Check out our info flyers or send us a message for more info on current and upcoming programs and how to register your child!

We will not be running programs this year as Miss Brielle is expecting a new little wildling any day now and will have her hands quite full for the time being. Stay tuned for updates in the next year to see if/when we will be resuming programs. Have a great summer everyone!

For all our boy moms 💚

Having a son is like having
a precious companion for life.
A loyal buddy forever.
Someone to share
adventures and dreams with.
A partner in exploration and discovery.
A son brings energy and
enthusiasm that never fades.
He's a treasured gift.
Through laughter and tears,
triumphs and tribulations,
he'll be your guiding light,
your confidant, your pride.
A son is a blessing that wraps
your heart in unconditional
love forever and always.

5 days of non-stop fun at our all
Boys nature camp week!! Wow 🤩 All the boys were so eager to take on new challenges and develop their skills! They kept me on my toes for sure.

Highlights from the week:

Solar oven s’mores!! Better than open fire s’mores apparently 🤷‍♀️

Some boys learned to master the flint and steel fire starting who had never done it before - every single one lit at least a few fires (unheard of with a group this size!!)

They even managed to start our campfire on the last day with nothing but natural foraged materials and flint! They remembered that spruce resin is flammable and made their own fire starter bombs 💣 i was so impressed! And of course they celebrated by roasting ALL THE THINGS on their hand carved roasting sticks.

The river was a daily highlight! We had perfect weather for swimming and discovering the many mini beasts that make the riverbed their habitat. 🪱🦎🐌🪲

Paracord survival bracelets were definitely everyone’s fav craft!

We also made natural dye sun photos(anthotypes), propeller powered boats for the river, and learned the basics of compass navigation with a treasure hunt!

😮‍💨 what a week!

And still they wished the fun would never end - we could easily fill the rest of summer with endless nature activities with these boys!

We’re all looking forward to next years summer camp weeks!! 🤩

I can’t believe today was the last day of our spring session! Time sure flies when you’re having fun 🤩

Today we celebrated Indigenous Peoples day with stories, crafting medicine wheels made of foraged dog wood and willow branches, and Of course - campfire bannock!

Cooled off In the river this afternoon and found our new special “secret spot” that has the best minnows 😆

And for our final circle reflection time each of the kids remarked that their favourite part of our time together was the new friendships that were made 🥰 Such a great group of kids…

Finally got to make the spruce tip syrup I’ve been meaning to do with our nature school kids before spruce tips harden off. Added to Soda water makes a Deliciously tree like Soda with a hint of campfire 🌲

Enjoying the sunshine in the water and shade of the trees as we fight off mosquitoes (who invited them??).

The kids foraged for spruce tips and (hopefully) learned about the many uses and medical benefits of this seasonally abundant tree food! We also practiced knife skills by carving marshmallow roasting sticks (and had to try them out of course!).

The river was full of minnows and other interesting critters - and so nice to cool off in on a hot afternoon. Today flew by! I can’t believe there’s only one week left of our spring session,🌿🌲☀️

Another beautiful day playing and learning outside! We practiced our woodworking skills and each made a “clickity-clacker” (what else could it be called? 😆). As usual, my afternoon curriculum plans were effortlessly replaced with spontaneous adventure as we finally were able to explore the river bank… hard to top that one! We will be returning to this beautiful spot every chance we get so we can observe what changes and grows as the summer progresses (we found so many critters!)

Got to geek out on dandelions with my buddies today 🤓 these kids are so smart I had to really dig deep in my bag of herbalist tricks 😆 I love how they keep me on my toes and are always up for an adventure! The highlight was unanimous… dandelion fritters were a hit! Delicious and “good for you” 😜

Awesome first day of our Spring season! The kids had a blast brushing up on their bushcraft skills, playing with their friends (known and new) and exploring our new camp area! We were prepared for high winds and rain today but it ended up being a lovey day and we were peeling the layers off 😌
