This is a lovely piece called “Ice Crystals” by Susan Staples Bell. I am sharing this video today as it epitomizes why I teach music.

Total honesty - it’s been a difficult 7 months dealing with issues affecting my voice that have been preventing me from singing and speaking the way I am accustomed to. The way I love to.

Many times when it has felt too hard, or too overwhelming, I have been thankful for my other instruments to turn to. Playing pieces on my piano that feel good and sound beautiful has brought me a sense of calm, even if temporarily. Working through parts where I would stumble, whether it is an easier piece or a challenging piece…taking that time to work through the pattern, hear and see and feel the progress…returning to the piece after a few days to play through with confidence and caring.

This is what I want for my students. I want for them to have their music to turn to when they need comfort, when they need a break, when they need joy, when they want to create something that won’t take up any physical space but will take up space in their brain and their body, firing up all the neurons that get fired up when we make music. I want them to be able to get lost in a piece and feel each vibration with a sense of ownership. “I have done this…I have created this…I have given myself this little treat”.

It is a powerful thing and it is not only accessible to the virtuosos in the world. Chopsticks brings joy!! Mary Had A Little Lamb brings joy!! We play our instruments. Play = fun! Playing is enjoying what you are doing.

I don’t want to know what my life would be like without music.

That’s a wrap on teaching all the things for another season!! Thanks kids and families for a super fun year.

Per the sign behind me…watch for falling ice and snow this summer 🤪 the way the weather has been, could be a thing this year!

Keep well…play lots of music, listen to lots of music, sing lots, dance lots, watch musicals, go to shows. Have the best time ❤️🎵🎵❤️

A little article and video I was happy to be part of for the Meet The Musicians of Kawartha Northumberland series. I love to write music and perform…haven’t done much of it lately…but I also love teaching music! I can’t think of anywhere else I would rather do these things than in this wonderful community we live in. 🎵❤️🎵

Today marks my 14 year anniversary of teaching private music lessons 🎉🎉

The studio has grown and evolved so much over the last decade and (almost) a half and continues as I type!

Did you know I am constantly adding new techniques, games, and music to our lessons? My education as a musician and music teacher is a continuous process…I wouldn’t have it any other way!

Behind every 1/2 hour lessons is a lot of prep, thought, and care. Each student learns in a slightly different way and I try my best to meet their needs and to steer them in the direction they want to take their musicianship.

Thank you present and past (and future) Red Door Music students and families for helping make this something I can be excited about each and every day ❤️🎵❤️🎵

The students are getting Halloween Music this week 🎃 👻 🧙🏼‍♀️

This piece is super fun to play and I’ve been working on it the last two days.

This took MANY takes to get a full play through without finger fumbles…and that’s ok! In studio we work on performing and practicing. Sometimes things don’t go the way you want to when performing but you just keep on playing. Your enjoyment while playing is what is most important and it will show.

Be proud of your work, students, and know that the teacher makes mistakes too. It makes us human
