How the Learning Model Works

Cottonwood Rose is built around an integrated learning model.

Our students learn through a combination of:

Project-based academics
Literacy, numeracy, science, social studies, and core competencies are woven into meaningful projects and real-world questions.

Land-based learning
The forest, fields, gardens, trails, animals, and seasons are not just a backdrop — they are part of the curriculum.

Community mentorship
Students learn from people with real skills: growers, builders, artists, makers, land stewards, and community members.

Family-supported home learning
Families remain an important part of the learning ecosystem, with home days supporting practice, reflection, documentation, and deeper integration.

This is not conventional school outdoors.

It is a whole learning ecosystem designed to help children grow intellectually, socially, emotionally, and physically.

What does a day at Cottonwood Rose look like?

Around various play structures, scrambling over the wooden rounds or 'thistle hill,' the day begins with play.

As kiddos arrive parents are encouraged to connect and chat.

When the crow call is heard to signal the beginning of circle, kiddos trickle in to where our educators introduce the day, songs are sung and the respective cohorts break off and make their way out into the land to begin their learning focus for the day.

The learning might move into the forest, the gardens, the workshop, or one of our indoor learning spaces.

Students may be developing their literacy and numeracy through project based work in their Heartwood session, or tracking seasonal changes with the nature educators, tending new seedlings, building something useful, or preparing food in a mentorship session.

The goal is not to separate “school” from life.

The goal is to help students see that learning is everywhere — in the soil, in stories, in numbers, in community, in tools, in conflict, in care, and in the questions that arise from paying close attention.

Welcome to Cottonwood Rose Learning Community

Cottonwood Rose is a land-based learning community in Black Creek, created for families looking for a different kind of educational path — one rooted in place, relationship, curiosity, and real-world experience.

Our program brings together project-based academics, outdoor learning, community mentorship, farm and forest rhythms, and family-supported home learning.

Students spend their days learning on the land: exploring forests and trails, working in gardens, building skills with their hands, asking big questions, and developing strong foundations in literacy, numeracy, collaboration, and self-direction.

We believe children learn best when they feel known, connected, challenged, and alive in their learning.

Hi Folks!

Enrolment is filling quickly for the coming year. We’re super excited about the new energy and enthusiasm pouring in from new and interested families.

Our Seeds, K-2 cohort is full and waitlisted but
we still have a few spaces available in our older cohorts:

Sprouts (Gr3-5): 3 spots available

Saplings (Gr6-8): 4 spots available

For families looking for something different — something warm, grounded, relational, and deeply connected to place — this may be a good fit!

The Cottonwood Rose Learning Community is a unique alternative education program in the Comox Valley. Integrating project-based learning, nature immersion, mentorship, community, and meaningful time on the land.
