Our day was full today at Birtle Collegiate learning about Residential Schools, and in particular about the Residential Schools in Birtle.

We started with a student led assembly, followed by Grades 7-12 walking to the Residential School base where Mrs. Stonehouse shared some stories that were shared with her when a group of Survivors toured BCI this past summer. When we got back to the school we had a a school wide hot dog lunch (thanks for cooking Mr.G).

In the afternoon some of our Peer Counsellors/Student Counsellors worked with our Grade 7/8 classes on different Art pieces that we will have displayed through our building.

Our Grade 5 and 6 classes were invited to and attended an Orange Shirt Day event in Russell hosted by Gambler First Nation and had a great learning experience as well.

Today was an important day of learning and we hope you will take some time tomorrow on the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation to continue talking and reflecting on the impact Residential Schools had on Indigenous people and our roles moving forward towards Reconciliation.

A special note, we need to recognize Ms.Simard for all her organizing and planning today as well. 🧡🧡🧡

And a shout out to Ben Mitchell for the drone pictures!**

We are working with Hockey Manitoba again to host a Hockey Officials Clinic here at BCI!

Please see the attached poster for more information. The information has also been emailed to our parents as well as other schools in our division!

We also apply to Sport Manitoba for a grant to help offset costs of the clinic, and then work with our local hockey boards for further compensation for families - assuming our refs officiate locally.

Tomorrow, Birtle Collegiate will recognize the Day of Truth and Reconciliation.

Please join us for our annual Residential School Walk in honour of all students and families that attended and were affected by the Residential School system.

We are in a unique position at BCI where we look directly at the Birtle Residential School through our windows everyday, and had survivors attend our school.

It is up to us to continue to learn and do better today and always. We at BCI stand with our Indigenous neighbours and friends.

Please wear ORANGE!

Every Child Matters. 🧡
