THE SHILOH PUPPY TIMELINE: A SURVIVAL GUIDE
It all starts so innocently.
You bring home a fluffy little teddy bear who toddles around, trips over their own feet, and spends most of their day sleeping. They’re adorable. They’re perfect.
Then they wake up at 4:37 AM.
Every.
Single.
Day.
Suddenly your life revolves around potty breaks, monitoring every suspicious sniff, and sprinting across the house yelling, “OUTSIDE! OUTSIDE! OUTSIDE!” like you’re trying to evacuate a building.
Just when you start feeling confident and think you’ve cracked the potty-training code…
💥 BAM. RAPTOR MODE. 💥
Overnight, your cuddly teddy bear transforms into a tiny dinosaur with the bite force of a hydraulic press.
Were their teeth always this sharp!?
Those little baby needle teeth combined with their rapidly increasing size create a level of destruction that really shouldn’t be possible in such a cute package.
You redirect.
You train.
You redirect some more.
You wonder if any of your training is actually sinking in.
Then one day…
💡 LIGHTBULB MOMENT.
A breakthrough!
They sit when asked. They make a good choice. They actually listen.
Hope returns. You think you’ve turned a corner.
💥 BAM. FEAR PHASE. 💥
Suddenly your confident puppy is suspicious of a flowerpot.
Or a garbage can.
Or the mailbox they’ve walked past 200 times.
You find yourself wondering if you’ve accidentally discovered some deep temperament flaw that appeared overnight.
Good news: you haven’t.
Their adolescent brain is simply experiencing a biochemical roller coaster.
Your job is to be their tour guide until the ride slows down.
A week or two later their brain comes back online and things feel normal again.
For approximately seventeen minutes.
Because now the baby teeth start falling out.
Left.
Right.
And center.
And the chewing goes from “annoying” to “actively pursuing a career in demolition.”
Stairs.
Chairs.
Walls.
Table legs.
Nothing is safe.
You begin asking yourself why humanity collectively agreed that keeping these creatures inside our homes was a good idea.
But then…
Adult teeth start arriving.
Big.
Blunt.
Rounded.
GLORIOUS.
Good riddance, raptor teeth. Peace has finally arrived…or so you thought.
Because apparently shoes are still delicious.
“But wait,” you ask. “The adult teeth are already in!”
Correct. The visible part is in.
The roots, jaw development, and all the growing happening beneath the gum line are still underway.
So while the teething chapter isn’t completely closed, the worst is behind you.
Hang in there.
You’re almost out of the woods.
Then suddenly it’s their first birthday.
How did a year pass so quickly?
How did that tiny fluff ball become this enormous dog in only ten months?
As my breed mentor often joked:
“They’re a pretty great deal per pound.”
Honestly, the feed conversion rate is impressive. 😆
Now you’re past a year.
The training is working.
The pieces are coming together.
You’re finally seeing glimpses of the incredible adult dog they’re becoming.
You both feel like you’ve found your footing.
Then…
💥 BAM. FEAR PHASE 2.0. 💥
You swear somebody replaced your dog with a clone.
A clone who received none of the training.
Where did your well-behaved adolescent go?
Who is this stranger?
Fortunately, just like the first fear phase, this one passes too.
Unfortunately, it likes to stick around a little longer.
But keep going.
Keep training.
Keep building the relationship.
Because as they approach their second birthday, something almost magical starts to happen.
All those lessons.
All that consistency.
All that work.
It comes rushing back.
Their hormones begin to level out.
Their brain catches up to their body.
And suddenly you find yourself living with the dog you’ve been working toward all along. ❤️
So if you’re currently raising a Shiloh puppy and questioning your life choices…
Hang in there.
The sleepless mornings end.
The raptor teeth disappear.
The fear phases pass.
The shoes eventually become less exciting.
And what waits on the other side is something truly special.
An intelligent, intuitive companion who genuinely cares about their people and forms a bond that is difficult to put into words.
The puppy phase may feel endless while you’re in it.
But one day you’ll look at your adult Shiloh and realize you’d do every bit of it all over again. 🥰
