"Put yourself out there, and don't shy away."
That's the advice Michelle Michaud gives students and grads today, but it's also advice she's lived throughout her own career.
After university, she wasn't entirely sure where she wanted to go. Loyalist's Human Resources Management graduate certificate gave her practical skills and a place to start.
Her path led to opportunities in multiple industries before eventually bringing her to the City of Quinte West, where she now serves as a Human Resources Business Partner.
Looking back, Michelle says every step, planned or unplanned, helped shape the professional she is today.
"You can gain connections even from volunteer opportunities, because you never know where they might lead... Be an advocate for yourself!"
Read Michelle's story and learn how one decision to pursue practical training helped launch a career built on continuous learning and helping others.

At 38, Christina MacDonald returned to the classroom with years of sales experience, a record of professional success and one unfinished piece of business.
She had left high school after Grade 10. In the years that followed, she built a career by showing up, learning quickly and proving herself. But by her mid-30s, Christina knew she wanted something different — and she wanted to go back and finish what she had left behind.
That decision brought her to Loyalist College’s Career and College Prep program, where she began working toward her Academic and Career Entrance Certificate, also known as Grade 12 equivalency.
From there, Christina continued into Business – Accounting.
This spring, she crossed the Convocation stage as a Loyalist graduate.
“There is absolutely no way that I could have made it through my first year and now my second year in college without the foundations that the Prep program faculty helped me build,” Christina says. “They taught me that it is never too late to start and to take control of your dreams and future.”
Christina also credits her husband, Steven, whose love, support and encouragement helped make her education journey possible.
For Christina, the message is simple: “It’s never too late to rewrite your story.”
