It's started again.

Four weeks in, the clean slate is gone. The homework struggle you hoped was behind you is back at the kitchen table.

Maybe a comment on June's report card stayed with you all summer. Maybe you meant to look into it before school started, and then summer happened. That's normal, and there's plenty of school year left to do something about it.

New grade, new teacher, same struggle. That's not a phase. It's usually a skill that hasn't been built yet, and skills can be built, but someone has to find out which skill first.

You don't have to work that out on your own. Send us a message and tell us what's happening. That conversation is where it starts.

No child chooses to struggle.

If you've ever wondered whether your child just isn't trying hard enough — this one's for you.

Nearly 1 in 10 Canadian kids has a learning disability. That's three students on every school bus working twice as hard for half the result. They're not lazy. They're missing a skill — and skills can be built.

That's our whole job, and we've been doing it in Halifax & Bedford for 43 years.

Happy kids first. Grades follow.

People assume we exist to improve grades. We're not against good grades — but that's not really it.

School is 13 years of a childhood. A child who spends those years feeling stupid carries it long after graduation. A child who learns that hard things can be figured out carries that instead.

Compassion. Emotional intelligence. Accountability. And under all of it: happy kids who find joy in learning.

That's been the goal for 43 years. → novaread.com

What's a percentile, really?

The 16th percentile is not a 16% grade. It means that out of 100 kids the same age, your child is performing ahead of 16 of them — like the growth charts at the pediatrician, but for reading, spelling, or math.

Percentiles tell us two things: exactly where to start, and — after the work — exactly how far your child has come.

We re-test against the same benchmarks, so progress isn't a feeling. It's a number.

Guessing isn't reading.

Some bright kids never learn to sound words out — they memorize, predict from pictures, and guess from context. It works surprisingly well… right up until the books get harder and it suddenly doesn't.

If your child's reading "fell off a cliff" in grade 3 or 4, this is often why. The good news: decoding is a skill, and skills can be taught.

Our Level 1 Reading & Spelling program starts exactly there.

Slow reading is a signal.

Reading is a tower of skills, and decoding is near the bottom. When every word takes effort, there's nothing left over for the actual point: understanding the sentence.

So if your child reads slowly and remembers little — those aren't two problems. They're one.

Fluency first. Comprehension follows. We build both, one-on-one.

French Immersion: help or hurdle?

For most kids, immersion is a gift. But for a bright child with an undiagnosed language-based learning difficulty, a second language can hide the struggle — until they're quietly drowning and nobody can see it yet.

Watch for: exhaustion after school, avoiding reading in both languages, a widening gap between what they can say and what they can write.

Considering a change for September? Now's the time to find out what's actually going on.

Coping isn't fixing.

Extra time. A note taker. Tests read aloud. If your child has an IPP or accommodations at school, you've heard the list — and these supports genuinely help kids cope.

But there's a second question worth asking at every school meeting: who is working on fixing the underlying skill?

Accommodation and remediation aren't rivals. Your child deserves both questions answered.

1 in 10.

Statistics Canada reports nearly 10% of Canadian youth have a learning disability. In your child's class of 30, that's three kids — usually bright, usually trying hard, usually wondering why it works for everyone else.

The earlier the root cause is found, the shorter the road back. That's what our assessment is for.

Questions about your child's report card this month? Send us a message — happy to talk it through.
