At La Palette Art School, students are guided at their own level, progress at their own pace, and each student's personal style is respected and encouraged as it emerges.
Nature is a common theme in much of the work and we strive to instill a respect for it.
This group of students aged 12 to 18 work on a project on butterflies.

THE BAGS

This special project gave students total artistic freedom in a both fun and functional way. Students aged 7 to 15 had the opportunity to paint their own cotton tote/shopping bag. We discussed how our society is becoming environmentally aware of plastic waste and emphasized the importance of using reusable bags instead of plastic for shopping – for themselves, or it could be a wonderful gift for their moms for Mother’s Day. Some decided to use it as a tote bag where they could express their personal style. What a great opportunity to create a totally unique, portable artwork that is also good for the environment!

These whimsical examples were created using acrylic paints mixed with fabric medium so that the painted fabric remained pliable, and fabric paint pens for outlines or details.

The clay project

Students created these charming relief sculptures with clay. First they planned their basic design as a two-dimensional sketch. Then they were given a slab of clay on which they recreated their drawing as a relief sculpture by moulding and attaching clay to the flat surface paying attention to form, and contours, and adding textures and fine details. The highly imaginative results are incredible!

THE INUITS

In this project, students of the La Palette art school observed the Inuit way of life and more particularly their fishing and hunting methods. They used acrylic with a special technique invented by the director of the school, Renate Heidersdorf. They were impressed by the results of their work.

TURTLES ! TURTLES ! TURTLES !

Many years ago, we did a project on turtles.
We decided to do it again this year with a generation of new students : 6 – 10 years old.

For many students, it was their first exercise in patterns
. . many repetitions.
They were encouraged to be intricate. Many learned what intricate means.
They worked with fine markers called sharpies and tinted them with watercolors.
The results are amazing !

THE SEPIA PROJECT

At La Palette Art School, students explore all kinds of subjects. They learn different mediums and techniques.

Inspired by sepia tone botanical prints from the 19th century, these expressive paintings captured the last blooms of summer. An emphasis was placed on light source, fine detail, and strong contrast with attention paid to the twists and curls of wilting flower petals. A hint of red was added to the background tint to serve to highlight the flowers. These wonderful studies were created with sepia watercolor paint and red watercolor ink.

La Palette Art School has not had an exhibition of adult students for the past five year, so the time has come to organize another. We are excited to invite all students who have attended La Palette over the years, as well as those who are part of it today to come see this exhibition starting Saturday June 8th (see the information on the poster below). Use your social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, What's App, Skype, text messages...) to let your family, friends and acquaintances know. More than fifty people will exhibit their works and more than one hundred works will be on display. Looking forward to seeing you all there!
