If you could have any control over your reincarnation, what would you choose to come back as and why?

Not all heroes wear capes.

Today was the last day of camp at Seeds Rooted. We painted kites, and then took a little break to fly them. That’s when one got caught at the very top of a tree.

I looked up at it and told the girl honestly, I have no idea how we’re getting that down. It was way too high.

Then in walks Dakin from TruCut Bayfield Trees & More. With one of those seriously impressive tree service poles, he got the kite loose and brought it safely back down. Watch what he did.

Thank you, Dakin, for turning a stuck kite into the best surprise ending to our camp. 🙌

What an afternoon. 🧈🌿

We gathered at badapple in Bayfield, shook cream into butter with our own hands, blended it with garden herbs, and hammered fresh flowers onto cards and bookmarks to take home.

This is what the Nourished Table is all about – slowing down, making something real, and sharing it with good people.

I am so grateful for everyone who came and made this such a beautiful afternoon. What a joy it is to do this work.

A wounded bird came to us today at work at Bad Apple Brewing Company . We tried to help, but it passed before we could get it to safety. So we did the only other thing we could do: we dug a small hole out back and buried it with lavender and hollyhock, tucked right in, close.

We stood there for a moment. No words. Just presence.

I think this is what ritual is for. Not to change the outcome, but to mark that something has passed, that a transition has happened and deserves to be witnessed rather than stepped over. Death is part of all our lives, human and otherwise, and so often we rush past it, especially when it’s small, or brief, or not officially ours to grieve. But when we let ourselves pause, even for a creature we never knew, something in us expands. We practice tenderness as a discipline, not just a feeling that shows up when it’s convenient.

Ritual doesn’t need to be elaborate or understood by anyone else. It just needs to be honest. A held moment. Some flowers. A small grave dug with care. That’s enough to hold both the bird and ourselves.

Rest easy, little one.

Summer camp, July edition. A week of grubby hands and good questions.

We started the week with compass work of our own, learning to find our bearings and seeking out creatures in the underbrush.

Ausable Bayfield Conservation opened up a full morning of wonder. We played at being birds ourselves, foraging and collecting seeds the way they do, looked closely at skulls and fur, pieced bones back together to learn who they belonged to, and played a game connecting bird anatomy to the kitchen tools we use every day. We’re so grateful for the land, the knowledge, and the care that made all of that possible.

With artist 🌀Linda Wiebe🌀, we tried our hands at cyanotype printing, pressing leaves into indigo images and learning a whole new way of seeing plants. Thank you for bringing your craft into our circle, Linda.

And on Thursday, we took over the kitchen at Trinity Church to make pizza, sweet and savory, with our own two hands. Thank you for opening your doors and letting flour dust every surface in sight; that kind of generosity is what makes a program like this possible.

More weeks like this coming in August. 🌿

When it’s warm, we hammock and read. 🦶📖

Day one of Weekly Wilds, and it was a good one to start with.

There was clay in our hands, a wander through the forest, s’mores by the fire, and a lunch planned out together for later this week. But mostly, it was just being out there, on the land, in the heat, getting to know each other without much of an agenda.

By afternoon the sun had other plans, so we did the only sensible thing: socks off, misters on, hammocks swaying, and Robert Munsch read aloud while the forest kept us cool. A small, lovely group, settling in together.

We’re excited for what’s still ahead this week, some wonderful guest speakers joining us, and we can’t wait to share.

Some afternoons are made for slowing down. 🌿🍞

Last week we gathered at Bad Apple Brewing Company Ltd. to make peasant bread from scratch and create nature-inspired thread art with foraged twigs. What a first one.

Our next gathering is July 30th – Butter and Botanicals. We will shake our own butter, blend it into something delicious, and hammer fresh botanicals onto cards and bookmarks to take home.
