🇨🇦 𝗙𝗥𝗢𝗠 𝗚𝗨𝗘𝗥𝗡𝗦𝗘𝗬 𝗧𝗢 𝗤𝗨𝗘𝗘𝗡𝗦𝗧𝗢𝗡 𝗛𝗘𝗜𝗚𝗛𝗧𝗦: 𝗦𝗜𝗥 𝗜𝗦𝗔𝗔𝗖 𝗕𝗥𝗢𝗖𝗞 🎯

Born in Guernsey on 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟲, 𝟭𝟳𝟲𝟵, Major-General 𝗦𝗶𝗿 𝗜𝘀𝗮𝗮𝗰 𝗕𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗸 would become one of the best-known figures of the 𝗪𝗮𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝟭𝟴𝟭𝟮.

⚔️ In August 1812, Brock — working alongside Shawnee leader 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗺𝘀𝗲𝗵 and Indigenous allies — helped secure the surrender of Detroit.

Just two months later, on 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟭𝟯, 𝟭𝟴𝟭𝟮, Brock was killed while leading an attack to retake 𝗤𝘂𝗲𝗲𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗻 𝗛𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 in Upper Canada (near what is now known as Niagara Falls).

And at the centre of the British infantryman's experience was a fi***rm familiar to muzzleloaders today: the “𝗕𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗕𝗲𝘀𝘀” 𝗳𝗹𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝗸𝗲𝘁.

Nearly a year after Brock's death, 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗺𝘀𝗲𝗵 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟱, 𝟭𝟴𝟭𝟯.

Every muzzleloader has a cleaning routine. Some keep it simple. Others have a system that could probably qualify as a chemistry experiment. 😄

Here’s why we’re asking:

🇨🇦 When the 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝘂𝘇𝘇𝗹𝗲 𝗟𝗼𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺 travels to competitions, many solvents and oils can’t easily come with us on the plane.

So, we want to know:

⚔️ 𝗗𝗨𝗘𝗟𝗟𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗣𝗜𝗦𝗧𝗢𝗟𝗦, 𝗔 𝗟𝗢𝗩𝗘 𝗧𝗥𝗜𝗔𝗡𝗚𝗟𝗘… 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗔 𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗬 𝗖𝗟𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗥 𝗧𝗥𝗜𝗖𝗞 😳

In 𝟭𝟴𝟳𝟯, Augustus “Gus” Healey and Denis “Din” Dooley found themselves competing for the affection of the same woman — 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝘀 𝗪𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲 — in St. John’s, Newfoundland.

Naturally, they decided there was only one reasonable way to settle the matter…

𝗔 𝗽𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗹 𝗱𝘂𝗲𝗹. 😬

On 𝗦𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟮𝟱, 𝟭𝟴𝟳𝟯, the two men met at 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗧𝗼𝘄𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗻𝗱, accompanied by their seconds. But there was a catch: their seconds had secretly 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝗹𝗹𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗹𝘀, leaving only blank charges.

💥 The pistols fired.

Dooley promptly 𝗳𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗱.

Healey, apparently believing he had just killed his rival, was horrified. Once the trick was revealed, you might think everyone shook hands and went home.

Nope.

🥊 They decided to settle things with their 𝗳𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗱 — and Healey reportedly won that round.

And Miss White?

She chose 𝗻𝗲𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺. 😂

The encounter is often described as the 𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗻𝗼𝗻-𝗳𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝘂𝗲𝗹 𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝗼𝗶𝗹 — although Newfoundland would not become part of Canada until 1949.

For generations, these lightweight, practical guns travelled with hunters and traders across vast stretches of North America.

The 𝗛𝘂𝗱𝘀𝗼𝗻’𝘀 𝗕𝗮𝘆 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗱𝗶𝗱𝗻’𝘁 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝘂𝗻𝘀. Instead, it purchased British-made smoothbore fi***rms for the trade, including the pattern that became widely known as the 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗪𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗴𝘂𝗻.

𝙎𝙤, 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙢𝙖𝙙𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙢 𝙨𝙤 𝙪𝙨𝙚𝙛𝙪𝙡?

A smoothbore could be loaded with a 𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗲 𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗴𝗮𝗺𝗲
or 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗯𝗶𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗹𝘀 — giving hunters a versatile fi***rm for very different situations.

Many North West guns shared some instantly recognizable features:
🔸 Flintlock ignition
🔸 Smoothbore barrel
🔸 Lightweight construction
🔸 Large trigger guard
🐍 A distinctive brass 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲

Mounted on the opposite side of the stock from the lock, the brass sideplate helped reinforce the area around the lock screws. Its distinctive serpent or dragon-like shape became so closely associated with North West trade guns that today it’s one of the features collectors and historians immediately look for.

Trade guns were used primarily for 𝗵𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗹𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝗱, but they also played roles in travel, defence, warfare and the wider fur-trade economy.

Their popularity came down to something simple: 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙮 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙠𝙚𝙙. They were light, versatile, relatively economical to use and well suited to life in the Canadian interior.
