This month, our school board will support Cyber Awareness Month. Look for tips and tricks from ECNO (Educational Computing Network of Ontario) to stay safe online. Here is today's tip:

Identity theft doesn’t happen overnight. It often happens because over time, we’ve shared little pieces of personal information that cybercriminals use to steal our identity and hack our accounts.

Birthdays, addresses, passwords, security questions, and even photos can all provide clues to someone trying to access your accounts.

Protect yourself by using unique passwords, enabling multi-factor authentication, and thinking carefully before sharing personal information online.

When it comes to birthday celebrations, most kids dream of toys, games, and wrapped presents. But for one thoughtful student at St. Mary’s Catholic School in Collingwood, this year’s birthday was all about giving back.

As St. Mary’s prepared for its annual Thanksgiving food drive, Grade 2 student, Monroe came up with a meaningful idea. Inside every invitation sent out for her birthday party last weekend, she included a special request: in lieu of personal gifts, guests were asked to bring non-perishable food items or donations to support the school’s collection for the local food bank.

With the help of her parents and a suggested item list provided by her school, she took all the monetary gifts she received and went shopping. She personally picked out every item—stocking up on pantry staples like canned goods, rice, and pasta.

On delivery day, Monroe arrived at school pulling a wagon filled to the brim. In total, her birthday effort brought in an impressive 200 items for community members in need.

Reflecting on her experience, Monroe shared that bringing the food into school made her feel "very happy" because she knew she was "helping other people who need food."

Her incredible gesture is a powerful example of living out the Catholic Graduate Expectations of being a Responsible Citizen and a Caring Family Member. Through simple kindness and selflessness, she demonstrated to her entire school community what the Thanksgiving spirit is truly about.

Congratulations to this amazing St. Mary’s student for turning her special day into a blessing for so many others!

Every week, we celebrate SMCDSB staff members recognized by a parent, student, or colleague.

This week, we are celebrating Alicia Crowley and Vanessa Tremblay, teachers and designated early childhood educators (DECE) at St. Angela Merici Catholic School. Alicia and Vanessa were nominated by a colleague who said:

“Mrs. Crawley and Mrs. Tremblay are the most spectacular Kindergarten/DECE team I have ever worked with!

Mrs. Crawley speaks kindly and gently to her students, explaining to them possible solutions to their issues without ever raising her voice.

Mrs. Tremblay follows with her sweet interactions with the children allowing them to make errors and correcting them if needed.

Both of these wonderful teachers are a joy to work with and deserve to be honoured!”

This week, we are also celebrating Sara Liu, an educational assistant at St. Charles Catholic School. Sara was nominated by a colleague who said:

“Sara is an exceptional EA. She is always actively looking for students she can help even when they are not on her roster. She gets down to the level of each child, and they respond well to her kind and soft approach. She always finds compassionate ways to de-escalate students. We love having Ms. Liu in our class.”

We would like to thank Alicia, Vanessa, and Sara for their commitment to Catholic education at our board.

Our phones travel everywhere with us, and they contain our photos, passwords, banking information, school accounts, emails, and personal conversations.

Protect your device by keeping software updated, using a strong screen lock, downloading apps only from trusted sources, and avoiding unsecured public Wi Fi whenever possible.

Every day, cybercriminals rely on one thing: people reacting before they have time to think.

Phishing emails and text messages often create urgency by claiming there’s a problem with your account, a missed delivery, or an unexpected prize.

Before clicking a link or sharing personal information, take a moment to pause. Check who sent the message, look closely at the URL, and ask yourself whether it feels legitimate. A few extra seconds can prevent a costly mistake.

A Magical Experience: Canadian Parents for French (CPF) brings Éric Leclerc to local schools

Students at St. Noel Chabanel Catholic School, Notre Dame Catholic School, and Our Lady of the Bay Catholic High School enjoyed an unforgettable learning experience this week, thanks to a generous Sociocultural Grant funded by Canadian Parents for French (CPF).

Internationally acclaimed magician and TV presenter Éric Leclerc visited the schools on October 1st and 2nd and wowed students with a high-energy bilingual performance that blended magic,comedy and audience participation.

Our Lady of the Bay Catholic High School also invited students from its feeder schools to attend, giving younger students an opportunity to experience the high school while enjoying the performance.

"We are always looking for ways to maximize funding and extend these incredible cultural experiences to as many students as possible," said FSL Curriculum Consultant Chantal Ross, “It’s a great way to give students an authentic opportunity to experience French outside of the classroom.”

CPF has supported other experiences for students, including visits from artists LeFloFranco and Missy D. These opportunities help make French language and culture more accessible and engaging for students across the board.

This week, we are celebrating Shawn Leslie, a custodian at Monsignor Lee Catholic School. Shawn was nominated by a colleague who said:

“Monsignor Lee has been blessed to have Shawn as our custodian. We all know how hard Shawn works to keep our school looking incredible BUT his pride in our school and our safety was incredible to witness one Sunday because there was Shawn out snow blowing the front of the school so it was ready for our arrival on Monday. Covered from head to toe in snow, here was Shawn taking care of his school family on his own time. Thank you Shawn for all the little things you do for us that go unnoticed because we aren’t present to see them. You are one of a kind!”

This week, we are also celebrating Gina Spataro, a teacher at St. Paul’s Catholic School. Gina was nominated by a parent who said:

“Ms. Spataro is a wonderful teacher. She truly cares about her students, parents and other staff. We at St. Paul's are truly lucky to have someone as passionate and caring for the students. Children succeed under her direction. Thank you Ms. Spataro for truly caring for these children.”

We would like to thank Shawn and Gina for their commitment to Catholic education at our board.
