DKA:
- Usually type 1
- Ketones and acidosis
- Kussmaul breathing
- Fruity breath

HHS:
- Usually type 2
- Very high glucose
- Little or no ketones
- Severe dehydration

Without an open airway, oxygen cannot reach the lungs and the brain is damaged within minutes. That is why the ABCs put Airway before Breathing and Circulation.

- Stridor after thyroid or parathyroid surgery
- Throat swelling in anaphylaxis: give epinephrine
- Snoring sounds or drooling in a drowsy client

A chest tube removes air or fluid so the lung can re-expand. Knowing what is normal helps you spot problems fast.

- Gentle rise and fall (tidaling) in water seal is normal
- Continuous bubbling in water seal means an air leak
- Disconnected? Put the tube end in sterile water
- Keep the drainage system below the chest
