Get the Conversation Going with Finger Painting!
Fun activities like finger painting are one of the best activities for building your child’s language skills. When you join your child in an activity they like and can get really involved in, you have lots of opportunities for enjoyable back-and-forth conversations.
Check out this handout for some Hanen strategies to make the most of finger painting to get conversations going. You can use these tips no matter what stage of communication your child is at, whether they communicate with sounds or gestures only or they speak in sentences.

Children need to hear words MANY times to learn them and they learn best through natural play with traditional open-ended toys and during shared book reading. Research shows that adults use more words per minute when interacting with children with books and traditional toys versus electronic toys.
Research by Anna Sosa (2015) showed that adults use more words per minute when playing with their child using traditional toys (blocks, puzzles, shape sorter) and reading books compared to playing with electronic toys (baby laptop, talking farm, baby cell phone).
Children need to hear words MANY times to learn them and learn best through natural play with books and traditional open-ended toys and repeating words during shared book reading and play opportunities.
