John and the community of Taylor. We enroll a population of 130 students, 13% of whom are First Nations students. Students come from a wide area that includes numerous small and larg

e acreages, the airport subdivision and two trailer courts. Our school has a staffing compliment of 10 very dedicated and collegial teachers and 5 support workers as well a principal and part time librarian. Our school enjoys itinerant access to a range of services such as the District Band Program, elementary counselilng and several district itinerants. Some themes that characterize our school are a commitment to child centered learning, with a passion for enhancing reading and writing skills. We have an active Parent Advisory Committee and a very supportive parent community. This year our school will be focusing on pursuing excellent reading and writing skills for all our students. From the Grade 4/5 class who have become Earth Rangers!

Our class became an Earth Ranger class in October of 2025. We decided we would collect food scraps that kids normally throw in the garbage. We weighed the scraps every day. We put the food scraps in a pail and then our teacher took the food scraps to a local hobby farmer. The hobby farmer is raising the chicks that the Kindergarten class hatched out in June of 2025. Every day, the chickens eat the food scraps that would normally go into the garbage. Sometimes we even get eggs from the Chicken Farmer. Our teacher bakes them into cakes or breads for our class. We are Earth Rangers because we reduce the food waste that goes into landfills. We recycle the waste food into chicken food. We help grow the chickens and the chickens help us grow strong, too. It's important to think of ways we can help be less wasteful and more environmentally friendly. Since November 1, we have kept 183 kg of food waste out of the garbage and inside chickens.

Another thing that we did this year was to collect paper, cardboard, containers, soft plastics and refundables. Every day, we walk to all the classes in the school and we pick up the recycling containers (and the chicken scraps) and we sort the clean recycling into big bags and bins. Our teacher and the principal take the recycling into town and sort it at the Eco Depot or the bottle depot. We used the money from the bottle recycling to go skiing this year. We keep recyclables out of the garbage. We taught the whole school how to recycle and what to recycle so we don't have to sort dirty recycling containers. Now everyone in the school knows what materials are recyclable and what isn't.

The last thing we did as an Earth Rangers Class was to start a Tower Garden in our class. We've never done this before, so it was a new experience for all of us. Sometimes our seeds germinated and sometimes they didn't. It's neat to be able to grow seeds indoors, because we live in The Frozen North. Our summer only lasts from mid-may to the end of August. We have a lot of sun, but not a lot of time to grow healthy greens. Now we can grow healthy greens indoors all winter long, if we want to. This year, we only started the Tower Garden on March 31, so we have lots of fresh herbs. The Grade 3 class uses our hydroponic lettuce (we saved the roots from "live lettuce" at the grocery store and replanted them in the tower garden). The tadpoles and pollywogs and frogs eat the lettuce in the grade 3 class. Our tower garden feeds people and frogs!

It's been a lot of fun being an Earth Rangers Classroom. The Earth Rangers Assembly was the coolest assembly we had all year long! Except for the ones we organized. Our assemblies were pretty great, too.

Some amazing Gymnastics BC/ Western Canada results from students attending Baldonnel School. Congratualtions to Morgan Andres and Courtney Andres for their great achievements!

The Grizzly Classic.
Morgan took home 3rd for Vault, 5th for Uneven Bars, 4th for Balance Beam, 3rd for Floor and 2nd All Around.
Courtney took home 3rd for Vault, 2nd for Uneven Bars (with a 9.95 score!!!), 2nd for Balance Beam, 3rd for Floor and 2nd All Around.

BC Xcel Provincial Championships.
Courtney took home 8th on Vault, 1st on Uneven Bars (with a 9.95 score!!!), 4th on Balance Beam, 8th on Floor and 3rd All Around.

Great work Baldonnel students and community on a very successful Entrepreneur Fair. If anyone has pictures, please upload them in the comments.

Here is a message from Mrs. McEachern:

Hi families & students! Hi Team Baldonnel School Office!

The Young Entrepreneur Fair was another incredible success! Our little school donated $303.90 to charity ($160.90 to BC Children's Hospital, $103 to SPCA, & $40 to Rimrock Wildlife Sanctuary). That means we netted at least $3039.00 (some donations are still coming in, but that's what the books add up to at this point). That's almost twice the profit of some in-town schools!

Bev from the Cultural Centre surprised us at the fair and asked 10 Young Entrepreneurs to exhibit and sell their work at the Art Gallery for a month. This allows our young salespeople to reach an even wider audience! We're still confirming who can come, but at this point, the people at the fair voted for Laith, Kensley, Gavin, Ailene and Harvey. Honourable mentions go to Elaine and Courtney, who respectfully declined the opportunity. More details to follow. We're still confirming dates and whatnot.

Laith, Kensley, Gavin, Ruby & Georgia (and from the grade 5/6 class... Morgan, Maclean, Malia, Avery, and Chris) have been voted by their peers for the People's Choice Awards.

The Green Award will go to Iver for his tree sales (grade 5/6 class).

Best customer service (as rated by the mystery shopper) went to Maclean (grade 5/6 class).

It takes a community to do things like this. From the bottom of our hearts, Mrs. Olsen and I thank you for your support. We know that it can be a lot of work for the home team when kids come home with grandiose ideas. Here's hoping the eco-friendly theme made production less expensive this year.
