The Region of Waterloo will experience a near total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024. The eclipse will start at 2:03pm, the maximum phase of the eclipse will occur at 3:18pm and it will then end at 4:30pm.

A solar eclipse is a rare event when the moon aligns perfectly between the earth and the sun, blocking out the sun’s light. Southern Ontario is one of the few places in Canada where the total solar eclipse will be visible. This will cause temporary darkness to sweep across Southern Ontario, captivating countless spectators. The last total eclipse in Southern Ontario occurred in 1925, and the next one after April 8th will be in 2099. It is anticipated that the Region of Waterloo will experience the eclipse at 99%, this will leave approximately 1% of the sun visible, which is more than enough to cause damage to eyesight if viewed unprotected. 💕
