Drum Building Workshops with Leo Brooks

This video is AWESOME! It was played at Prince Charles school in Trenton before the performance they did today with the drums I helped them build last month. I wish I could have been there!

Another fantastic batch of drums designed by Grade 4-5 students inspired by indigenous art. Many students were asked to create a depiction of their spirit animal. So many good designs!

The theme for this year's batch of drums was Canada 150. They were played by Grade 6 students for the remainder of the year and used in a big Canada 150 concert at the end of June.

This was an amazing project spearheaded by Art Teacher Ms. MacLean. Over the course of 3 terms she painted drums with every grade 7 in the school, more than 350 drums all together. At the end of the project we did a big drum circle with everyone outside in the courtyard. Hope to get some photos of that event from the roof of the school posted soon.

Normally when I make the taller tube drums with students, we don't also do designs on the skins, because they get so much more contact from hands when we play them. But these grade 5 students were very determined to ink their drum heads and I think a lot of the results are great!

These drums were made by grade 9 and 10 students in the aboriginal arts class at St. Joseph's catholic school led by Mr. Goddard. Some of the students were in the special needs program. Fantastic designs.

In early 2019 I will make my 5000th drum with students. Crazy!

This drum was painted by a very talented grade 8 student in the gifted program at Ecole Garneau in Orleans, ON. Easily one of the nicest drums I've ever seen in the drum building projects I've done over the last 8 years

Did two drum building projects in Barrhaven this month, at Mother Teresa High School and St. Joseph's High school. They have been great. I hope to get photos up soon!
