Jimmy Tao has been teaching piano in Aurora, ON since 2005 and started teaching in the Aurora and surround area since 1997. Since 2005 he has been teaching private piano, vocal and theory lessons from his home to students of all ages and skill levels. Students learn on a tradition Yamaha baby grand, in a room solely dedicated to teaching music. There are no distractions you would find in a common music school with lessons in a nearby room, no foot traffic, no noise pollution. The floor is hardwood and there is a giant window to let in natural light. Temperature is constantly perfect, humidity is always well maintained. These things seem trivial until you realize that most music studios have no idea how to control the temperature and humidity. This makes for a very uncomfortable learning environment. Jimmy studied piano at York University and quickly discovered his calling was to be a piano teacher, conductor and performer. With a handful of teachers to guide him, he attributes most of his success to Braham Goldhammer. A piano accompaniment teacher at York who really inspired Jimmy to be a better musician. He has aspirations of being a music director and conductor for professional theater, but will always be a teacher for his students. Jimmy specializes in sight reading music. When not working on a new show, he will read new music for fun and teach his students how to read the way he does and hopefully help them to read even better, faster than he did. He regularly tests his skills in sight reading competitions at the highest levels offered and has never received anything less than a gold medal and 1st in every competition ever entered in.

Tell me about your reasons for not practicing or not showing up. My last student is here fresh from surgery on his hand this week and told me he could move his right thumb to help out the left hand.

I was doing a demo for my student: revolutionary op 10 no. 12 - Chopin. He said he has the music. He opened his Casio piano demo book and sure enough, there it was (minus all the original dynamics). What are the odds??? So for “fun” I thought I’d show a grade 6 RCM student a heavy duty ARCT etude for a quarantine session. Today was show day after 4 days of practicing. He starts off by saying “I can only do the first page slow”. He proceeds to actually play it slow and get the idea of this monster. Super proud of him.

Today was the final day of summer lessons and for some, the final day of lessons with me after years together. Its always crazy to see my students year after year and then one day their off to University, then graduating and getting married.

Haven’t see these two on stage since we were had “Beauty and the Beast” with UTC. Alina did great with her first solo performance ever. I asked Paulina just a few days ago if she would come sing at my recital. We ran a little sound check at the start and without real rehearsal, we were rocking like old times.
Todays recital went pretty smooth at the new location. Staff was great, students were great weather was great.
