Fun studying fact: Re-reading your notes is basically the equivalent of watching the same TikTok on repeat. 📖😅

It turns out one of the most common study habits (staring at notes, hoping they'll sink in) is also one of the least effective.
Here's what works:
-Flashcards with spaced repetition; active recall beats passive review every time
-"Teach it back"; have your student explain it to you, gaps and all
-Short, frequent sessions (three 20-minute sessions is better than one two-hour cram)
-Quiz them. Testing shows what they don't know, which is the point.

Another helpful hint: Strong keyboarding skills free up major brainpower for thinking instead of letter-finding. Teaching your student to type efficiently is worth the early investment.

If your child is working hard, trying their best, but still struggling to read, you may be wondering whether something more is going on. Could it be dyslexia? It’s the most common learning disability in the world, estimated to affect between 5–20% of the population, and many children go unidentified for years simply because parents and educators aren’t sure what to look for.

Early identification makes an enormous difference. Research consistently shows that children identified before age 7 respond significantly better to targeted intervention. Here are ten signs that your child may have dyslexia.

For many students, putting pen to paper is a source of genuine distress, not because they lack ideas or intelligence, but because of a condition called dysgraphia.

Dysgraphia is a neurological learning disability that impairs a person’s ability to write, affecting the physical act of handwriting, spelling, and the organization of written expression. It’s sometimes referred to as a specific learning disorder (SLD) with impairment in written expression.

It’s not a reflection of effort or ability. Students with dysgraphia often have rich inner worlds and sharp minds; they simply face a disconnect between what they think and what their hand can produce on the page.

Recognizing this condition, and responding to it effectively, can transform a student’s academic confidence and long-term success. Learn more about how to support a student with dysgraphia.

Ever feel like your brain has a manager who's currently on a coffee break? ☕️ That's basically what executive function is: your mind's built-in project manager. It handles the behind-the-scenes essentials, like working memory, staying flexible when plans change, resisting the urge to check your phone for the tenth time, planning, starting the thing you've been avoiding, managing time, sticking with goals, and keeping your emotions in check.

This whole system develops slowly from toddlerhood all the way into your twenties, and it's run out of the prefrontal cortex, the brain's decision-making HQ. And executive function challenges are hereditary; if struggles like this run in your family, that's a real thing.

So, if your student seems to have big ideas but a tough time launching them (or finishing them, or remembering where they put them), they might just have a manager who needs a little extra support.

👉 Head to our blog for practical tips on helping kids with executive function challenges thrive at school.

The start of a new school year brings a wave of change: new classrooms, routines, noises, smells, and textures. For a child on the autism spectrum, that wave can feel like a flood. Research shows that sensory processing differences affect about 90% of autistic children, showing up as either over-responsiveness or under-responsiveness to everyday sights, sounds, and textures. Left unaddressed, these differences can interfere with attention, participation, and academic performance, even in students whose intellectual ability is not in question.

The good news: there’s a solid, growing evidence base on what helps, and a clear body of research showing that parent involvement and self-advocacy skills materially improve outcomes for autistic students. Here’s how to turn that research into a plan for your child this fall.

Reading is one of the most complex skills the brain is asked to perform, and for some students, it is also one of the most effortful. Whether your child struggles to decode words, reads accurately but retains little, or avoids reading altogether, there are meaningful ways you can offer support.

Reading issues are genetic, so if you’re a parent who also has difficulty reading or decoding, it will be most effective to tap a strong reader in the family (or a friend) to work with your child.

The transition to college or university is one of the most academically demanding shifts a student will face. Greater independence, heavier workloads, complex writing expectations, and the need to self-manage time, budget, and motivation can overwhelm the most capable and ambitious students.

We love this free student budget worksheet offered by the Ontario Securities Commission. Tools like this can help you plan and organize, even when it’s not your strong suit.

Looking to develop skills and strategies to make that move to postsecondary a little easier? We can help.
