Sometimes we look at everything we still want to learn and assume we're not ready to play for church yet, but what does your church actually need?

You might not need to know everything before you can start helping.

Ask what songs your church uses most often.
Find out what the music team actually needs.
Then start working on THOSE things.

You don't have wait until you can play everything you've ever wanted to play before asking, "How can I help?"

Before you learn another chord, ask yourself:

“How is my technique? How far can I hone the skills I already have?”

When we’re always looking for the next chord or the newest trick, it’s easy to forget to practice our basics.

Take the chords you already know and learn how to use them in different songs, different patterns, and different situations. You might be surprised how far those “simple” chords can take you.

Save this one and go try it at the piano.

Now. I know what I said before, but you still need to practice.

You don’t have to sit at the piano for hours every day drilling every skill you’ve ever learned, but consistent practice matters. And if you do practice a little every day, you’ll generally see improvement faster than if you only sit down once or twice a week.

The trick is knowing ✹what✹ to practice.

Pick the skill you’re working on, practice it consistently, and give yourself time to get better. Small, regular practice adds up.

I’ve been playing this little section over and over because one of my Zoom students wants to learn this song, and I’m determined to get those passing chords juuuuuuust right.

Because I don’t just want to tell them what the chords are. I want to figure out how to break it down so they can actually play it.

Some weeks, you’ll feel like your playing has really moved forward. Other weeks, you’ll play the same line, work through the same difficult section, and wonder if anything is changing at all.

Don't get discouraged. That awkward chord will become automatic. The song you’re working so hard on today might be the song you’re playing in church someday!

There will always be something new to learn.

So don’t be discouraged if this Monday doesn’t feel dramatic. Focus on today’s skill, and try it one more time. You're doing great!
