Applying knowledge, skills, attitudes to promote sustainable development.
ACTION PLAN

"Capacity Building among Community Health Workers to End Malnutrition in Ecuadorian Children using ABCD and Gender Mainstreaming Approaches"
Ecuador presents an epidemiological transition that affects vulnerable segments of the population such as children under five years, women and the elder. The prevalence rate of under-nutrition in children five years or less, is still a serious problem compared with other countries of the region, and there is a growing prevalence of overweight and obesity in school children, women and the elder.

Ecuador´s health indicators show a high rate of infectious diseases as well as a rising rate of NCDs, both diseases are present in the population around the country, but infections are more prevalent in rural settings and slums, both of them with low socio economic status and NCDs in urban environments with low and medium socio-economic status. As a consequence, epidemiological transition is burdening vulnerable population sectors: children under 5 years, pregnant women and the elder.

For the country case, the population is suffering of illness, which involves a basic human right. In Ecuador, the raising of NCDs is a burden to development, as well as under-nutrition, both conditions are related to loss of productivity and the second to less capacity to learn and to perform advanced skills later in life. As well, health is an essential Human Right established in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to be achieved by 2030.
o SDG 2: Ending Hunger
o SDG 3: Ensure healthy lives and promote wellbeing for all at all ages.
o SDG 5: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.

Scope
Impact:
Ending Malnutrition in Ecuadorian Children, using an Asset Community-led Approach and Gender Mainstream.
Outcome: Reduce to 3% undernourishment rate in children under 5 years old, by 2020.
Objective:
o Develop a Train of Trainers (ToC) Program for Community health workers using the Community Experiential Model to promote Behavioral Change and Support the Ending of Malnutrition in children under 5 years old.

PART 5: FINAL REFLECTIONS

Studying at Coady Institute has been a life changing experience, I can say that from the beginning of the program, there has been a change in how I perceive the context and meaning of leadership.

During these months I have experienced about multi-cultural education, international communications, and persuasive speech in international context; diplomacy, and neutral ways to communicate ideas, as well as proper use of language in multi-cultural settings. Those pathways in a very practical way, I can say that I did not travel through 16 different countries, but I had the opportunity to learn about the cultures and particularities in depth.

A core concept from my learning experience has been Intersectionality, for me it means the cue to understand people´s constraints and to solve it in an effective way. Moreover, due to its complexity, has been difficult to imagine how the combination and overlap of undermining circumstances affect underserved populations. Then, intersectionality is a theme to know more about, to do research and to understand it in my own context.

My formal education in leadership was indeed not extensive. During these months, the learnings has been enriching and different, starting from reflective activities and advancing to personal acquisition of new skills. Moreover, I experienced theoretical learning of new tools, as well as development of new attitudes as a transformational leader; knowledge and attitudes, together guarantees that I can incorporate them into my daily work and be a person who can lead effective processes of change in my environment.

The internal reflection, after these 20 weeks, has led me to recognize orthodox failures, omissions and good practices. This time has led me to recognize that I must improve, that I must be excellent. I have recognized that reflection of my own leadership practice is important to improve and correct mistakes.
Furthermore, self-awareness means commitment in my life, then at this moment, I realize that my leadership capacity cannot be hidden and I must assume the challenges that I face in my context day by day.

In the same way, during my reflective process, I understand that effective communication is essential to be a good leader and to lead with gender and cultural differences, because they can become barriers if the leader does not have the capacity to transmit clear and direct messages. As a conclusion, I do not forget that stories build bridges and that we must create spaces to share the stories of people and ours as well.

When I came to the Coady International Institute, I have a great interest in developing effective skills that have a social impact and that lead to changes in behavior in health and nutrition.
During these years, I have not developed my leadership capacity extensively. Now a days, I can say that I have the skills to develop an effective social change for accomplishing social justice with gender mainstreaming, being able to create a real impact when I return to my country.
