This week, the campers were invited back to the JBB by XOceans for a special hands-on experience. Getting to interact with the touch tank, handling marine animals like starfish, sea urchins, and scallops, the campers learned quite a lot about the fascinating diversity within our oceans. XOceans also invited the campers to play around with microscopes and encouraged them to dress up in stickers. 🪴 🌊 🪴🌊 🪴

Some of the campers took an interest in the work done by the library's digitization department this summer, and finally had a chance to visit them this week! After playing around with a scanner, the plants sat down to watch some of the footage currently being worked on by the department, and took a quick dirt shower before heading home for the day.

The plants were invited to meet up with Flourish@X this week in the Bloomfield Hub to practice mindfulness through painting! After sharing their personalized takes on an image of the sun, the campers bonded over a group hot chocolate break.

Feeling the need to get outside and photosynthesize on a hot day, the campers ventured out to Mahoney’s Beach and the Antigonish Landing.

With summer quickly coming to a close, and camp nearing its end, this was the perfect week for the campers to relax in the sun and dip their roots in the cool water.

This week the plant campers went down to the University Archives to get up close and personal with STFX history. Pouring over decades-old yearbooks, newspapers, and class photos allowed the plants to get a better sense of where they fit in the present and historical contexts of this university. Before leaving, they even spotted a young Brian Mulroney in one of the books brought out for them 😉

This week the campers visited the Antigonish Arts House for a private wheel throwing beginner class!

The plants learned the creative process responsible for some of their own pots and even tried their hands (or leaves) at forming one on a pottery wheel! Unfortunately, a lengthy dispute over glaze colour prevented the plants from collectively producing a kiln-ready pot... at least until they come back to participate in an open-studio pottery session.

This week, campers visited the Antigonish Heritage Museum to better understand the historical context and importance of Antigonish county 📚️

The campers hung out with several items on display, including a prosthetic leg, woven Mi'kmaq baskets, and an antique fire engine. The plants also took time to engage with the museum's new out-migration display, and left their names behind in the guest book for the next groups of visitors to spot.

Happy Canada Day from Plant Summer Camp!

This week the campers celebrated the summer weather and the 159th birthday of Canada by laying low on campus, exploring the library, and stopping to smell the roses on walks around campus.

This week the campers felt a little crafty, and expressed themselves through a variety of artistic mediums.

Between friendship bracelets, colouring sheets, piecing together a puzzle, and sketching beautiful portraits of the other campers, the campers kept themselves entertained for an entire afternoon! 🎨

This week the campers visited the People's Place Antigonish Town & County Library to explore everything the public library has to offer! The plants attended a story time, checked out artwork by Alan Syliboy, read some science fiction, and caught up on celebrity news.
