Hi everyone meet Jay and learn about his SODC experience:
SODC Experience/surprise: It’s been an interesting experience and better than I expected. What surprised me most is how much it feels like a family. I get to work with people again later in the program, so I already know their teaching style and expectations, and I feel comfortable approaching them for help.
Hybrid learning: I actually like it. It saves me a lot of commuting, and I can still easily reach my instructors. I particularly like online testing because I don’t have the stress of using a Scantron, there’s less chance of making mistakes, and I can get my grade quickly.
Favourite part: I really enjoy the instructors and the supportive environment, but I also really like the hands-on components. Dental Materials is especially fun for me because I get to do things like polishing, sealants and fluoride varnish. I also really enjoy hands-on radiology, and I feel fortunate that there is essentially an X-ray unit available for every two students.
Typical day: I really have two types of school days. On my online days, I have lectures, learn from home and sometimes work with my classmates. My in-person days are much more hands-on, with clinic, patient care, radiology and Dental Materials.
Advice to future students: I would say the workload can be heavy, but I try to prioritize and take it one day at a time instead of worrying about everything that’s coming later. I would also say to actually use the support that’s available. I’ve found the instructors and staff approachable, and I know I can reach out to them when I need help.
