Today we celebrate – a mission to create a more kind, inclusive world by raising awareness for anti-bullying. Bullying is a major problem in our schools, workplaces, homes, and online.

Wee Watch homes provide a welcoming, safe, and nurturing space, where children are treated equally, and kindness and compassion are demonstrated and encouraged daily.

Let's all treat every day like it is Pink Shirt Day, and all year long!

Mystery Reader: Bringing in the New Year 01/18/2023

Lunar New Year is just around the corner! Enjoy story time with Xian (Wee Watch Home Visitor), Xian is reading “Bringing in the New Year” by Grace Lin, a tale of a Chinese American family preparing for the new year. 🎊

Mystery Reader: Bringing in the New Year As part of this years "Together Wee Can, Read, Learn, & Grow" program, we will have a Mystery Reader read each book of the month. This month we are reading "...

This year our Together Wee Can program focuses on getting outdoors as much as possible – Together Wee Can Explore the Great Outdoors! Opening the doors to outdoor play in ALL weather provides children opportunities to spark their curiosity, which leads to wandering, exploring, and learning!

When children are dressed appropriately for the weather, it contributes to a positive outdoor play experience. Use this chart to help children dress for success!

With a new year also comes a new Together Wee Can program. We are excited to share this year’s program - "Together Wee Can Explore the Great Outdoors".

All year long we are going to get out and explore the great outdoors! Why? Not only because it’s fun, but also because there are so many great benefits to taking children outdoors to learn! Learning outdoors allows us the space to be more active, move more freely, and increases a child’s physical, emotional, mental, and social health.

With all those benefits, we thought we would help get the kids outside and back to nature, one adventure at a time! Our goal is to support our Providers with ideas for outdoor activities each month, for every season!

We kick things off this month with “Wonderful Winter”! Looks like some of our homes were eager to get started!

This month we kick off our new Together Wee Can program – Together Wee Can Explore the Great Outdoors. All year long we are going to get out and explore the season through a variety of activities! For the next 3 months lets have some fun exploring the great outdoors during Winter! Canadian winters are cold … but they can also be fun! Dress the kids up warmly and get outside for some active winter fun!

Our final book for our Together Wee Can Read Learn & Grow program is “The Night Before New Year’s”. Because New Years is celebrated at midnight, many children miss out on all the fun.

Along with reading this month’s story, we have a few fun ways you can celebrate with the children in your care:

1. Toast to the new year with a tasty mocktail: Create a signature mocktail drink (i.e., orange juice with cranberry juice and sprite) and give it a fun and creative name.
2. Have a Mock Midnight: Rather than waiting for clocks to strike actual midnight, do your countdown earlier in the day instead.
3. Make holiday crackers: Add a little sparkle to your dining table with this simple craft. All you need are some toilet paper rolls, treats, wrapping paper and some ribbons! It’ll give the kids something to do, and you’ll have some fancy holiday crackers for the new year!
4. Play dress-up: It is always fun to dress up and have a party. Have children pick their favourite fancy clothes and shoes and dress up for the celebration.
5. Create a Piñata Ball: You can’t ring in a new year without having a ball drop as you countdown.
6. Make a ball-shaped piñata with the children that resembles the big ball that drops in New York City. You can even have the kids help you decorate it with paint, glitter, and ribbons. Making Resolutions: During mealtime and before the countdown, go around and have everyone share their New Year’s Resolution for 2022.

Our "Together Wee Can Read, Learn, & Grow" program comes to an end this month. We are pleased to introduce our final “Mystery Reader”, meet Grace, she works in the Wee Watch Whitby office.

Grace will be reading our last book of the year, "The Night Before New Year's" by Natasha Wing, the perfect fit as we wrap up 2022 and get ready to ring in the New Year next week! 🥳

Check it out!

Feeding Our Feathered Friends: Rainbow Ice Bird Feeders
Help your neighbourhood birds make it through the long winter season with this easy and colourful DIY birdfeeder - kids will have fun making and looking at them!

What to do:
1. Add drops of food colouring into balloon and add water. Place filled balloon in a bowl to keep the round shape. Set outside to freeze.
2. Fill your cake tins with water and food colouring. Place a bowl inside the center of the cake pan and weigh it down with a full can of food. Set outside to freeze.
3. Once the water is fully frozen, remove your cans of food and fill the bowls with hot water. Allow the bowls to warm up until they can slip out of the ice.
4. Pour cold water over your ice orb and gently place your ice disk on top. The middle of the disk will be very thin and break up a bit in the very center, this is fine. Simply add a bit more cold water and snow into the center and press down to secure the orb and disk together. Allow it to freeze for a couple of hours.
5. Once frozen add birdseed and enjoy!
