On August 19, 1839, the French government purchased a patent from Louis Daguerre, who was one of the "founding fathers" of photography. France declared the daguerreotype process, invented by Daguerre, a gift to the world, for anyone to use without cost. That was the birth of photography and why we celebrate World Photography Day!
