Throughout the year, students in Mme Grant’s class, researched and learned about two former Almonte residents, Lieutenant Warner Bole, a WW1 soldier, who was killed in the Battle of Passchendaele and Nursing Sister Christina Stewart, who also served in WW1. Lieutenant Bole was a highly decorated soldier, who was awarded two medals for bravery. His name can be found on the Menin Gate in Ypres (Belgium) and in the Book of Remembrance on Parliament Hill. Nursing Sister Stewart died from tuberculosis, which she contracted, as a result of tending to soldiers which were infected from the disease during the war. The students worked alongside CWO Mike Wiggins, who guided them through this important work. In early June, students wrote persuasive letters to the Almonte Legion and two students were selected to present to the Legion Executive and advocate for Warner and Christina’s names to be added to the Almonte cenotaph.
In the spring, the students also held a popcorn fundraiser to raise money to purchase Remembrance Day banners to honour these two deserving war heroes. They raised enough money to also donate to the No Stone Left Alone Memorial Foundation and the Almonte Legion Poppy Fund. We are very proud of their hard work and commitment to honour Lieutenant Bole and Nursing Sister Stewart.

On June 16th Mrs. Robinson’s Grade 6 students from R. Tait McKenzie, raised a grand total of $2768.00 for the Almonte General Hospital with their Businesses for Beds! The students worked in small groups to plan, budget and prepare products for 8 businesses that included face painting, face drawings, popcorn, candy kabobs, lemonade, cupcakes, origami and bookmarks. They were overwhelmed by the support from the parents and greater community. Thank you for coming out to make this event such a huge success! A special thank you to the Almonte Print Shop for their support.
