This summer stretched me as a leader.
For the first time, our Village was thriving in multiple places at once.
And that meant letting go of something many leaders quietly carry…..the belief that we need to be everywhere, overseeing everything.
Instead, I had to practice the very value we ask our children to practice every day.
Trust.
Trust in our facilitators. Trust in the relationships they’ve built with children. Trust in the culture we’ve created together. Trust in myself.
One of the greatest lessons this summer has reminded me of is this:
Trust isn’t just something we hope children develop.
It’s something adults must choose to embody.
When we model trust with one another, we create the kind of community where everyone, children and adults alike, can grow into themselves.
That’s the kind of Village we’re building.

Somewhere along the way, many of us began to see play as something we leave behind.
Something children do until they grow up.
But what if we’ve misunderstood play all along?
What if play has never been about age…
What if it’s always been about connection?
Connection to ourselves.
Connection to one another.
Connection to our communities.
Connection to the world around us.
Play isn’t just entertainment.
It’s one of the ways humans connect.
Maybe that’s why children seek it so naturally.
They’re not simply passing the time.
They’re practicing one of the most human things we do.

We often say we want learners to be intrinsically motivated.
To persevere.
To think creatively.
To follow their curiosity.
To care deeply about what they’re learning.
But intrinsic motivation doesn’t grow because we’re told what to care about.
It grows when we are given the freedom to discover what we care about.
When we are trusted to follow an idea.
To solve a problem.
To ask a question.
To create without already knowing the outcome.
The goal isn’t to make children motivated.
It’s to create the conditions where motivation can grow from within.

When we think about sustainability in education, we often think about materials.
Reusing.
Recycling.
Making the most of what we already have.
And those things matter.
But sustainable education goes deeper than that.
It begins with the understanding that the most valuable resource in any learning environment is not the curriculum, the materials, or the carefully prepared activity.
