Sockeye Fishery Update

The marine Food, Social and Ceremonial (FSC) sockeye fishery closed effective midnight on August 24, 2026.

The closure follows a downgrade to the estimated abundance of the Summer run Fraser sockeye, with current abundance estimates much lower than forecast before the season.

At this time, we do not expect the FSC sockeye fishery to reopen for the remainder of 2026.

Proposed ʼNa̱mg̱is Land Code Amendments – Member Information

After several years of work, ʼNa̱mg̱is First Nation is moving toward a Member vote on proposed amendments to our Land Code.

This project, funded through the First Nations Market Housing Fund, is intended to help create a stronger foundation for future home ownership opportunities in our community. The work has been completed in partnership with the First Nations Land Management Resource Centre and Holly Vear Law, with input from the Lands Management Advisory Committee and ʼNa̱mg̱is Lands staff.

We are now moving into the Member engagement stage, with information sessions planned for September and October before the proposed vote in November.

📅 September 10 – Virtual information session
📅 October 15 – In-person information session
📅 October 25 – In-person information session
📅 November 2026 – Targeted Member vote at the planned AGM

Please note: These are proposed dates and are subject to change. Please watch for updates as details are confirmed.

🐟 Wild Salmon Blues – Saturday, August 29

Join us in Qualicum Beach for an evening in support of ’Na̱mg̱is First Nation’s ongoing fight to protect wild Pacific salmon.

The evening will feature live music from ’Na̱mg̱is/Dzawada’enux̱w blues musician Garret T. Willie, with broadband opening, along with speakers, a silent auction and more.

Funds raised will support ’Na̱mg̱is as we continue our legal work to protect wild salmon for future generations.

Sockeye Distribution Update

There will be no fish distribution this week or over the weekend (August 20–23).

The fishery has been extended until midnight on August 25, and we will continue to monitor the situation and provide as much notice as possible if another distribution may take place.

At this time, there are no boats fishing for us through Saturday, so the earliest fish could come into the community would be Monday, August 24. This does not mean a distribution is confirmed for Monday.

There is currently not much fish moving through, but we will continue to monitor the situation and keep members updated.
