Curious Kids Children’s Centre

Today the children explored creativity by using bingo dabbers to decorate a variety of sea creature pictures. As they carefully chose colours and added patterns and dots to their artwork, they were developing a wide range of important skills through play.
Using the bingo dabbers encouraged the children to strengthen their fine motor skills, hand muscles, and hand-eye coordination as they grasped, pressed, and controlled the amount of pressure needed to create their designs. They also explored colour recognition and colour mixing while making creative choices about how they wanted to decorate each sea animal.

Today the children explored a variety of cardboard boxes during free play. What began as imaginative play with the boxes quickly evolved into an investigation of tearing and ripping both the cardboard and paper. The children eagerly experimented with using their hands to pull, tear, bend, and break apart the materials, showing curiosity about how different textures and strengths responded to their actions.

This open-ended exploration provided many valuable learning opportunities. As the children tore and manipulated the materials, they strengthened the small muscles in their hands and fingers, supporting fine motor development and hand strength needed for future writing and self-help skills. They also explored cause and effect by discovering how much force was needed to tear different materials and observing the changes that occurred as the cardboard and paper ripped apart.

The activity encouraged problem-solving, critical thinking, and creativity as children experimented with different techniques and shared ideas with their peers. Working alongside one another also promoted communication, cooperation, turn-taking, and social interaction as they discussed their discoveries and collaborated during play. Sensory exploration was another key aspect, allowing children to experience the different textures, sounds, and resistance of the materials while engaging their curiosity through hands-on learning.

Simple, child-led experiences like this encourage exploration, creativity, and confidence while supporting development across multiple learning domains.

Under the Sea Magnet Tile Challenge

Today the children explored an exciting Under the Sea Magna Tile activity. They carefully matched magnetic tiles to outlined templates to create a variety of ocean animals and sea-themed objects. The children used their observation skills to identify the correct shapes, rotated and flipped tiles to fit within the outlines, and persevered as they worked through each challenge.

Learning Opportunities:

* Strengthened problem-solving skills by figuring out which shapes fit each outline.
* Developed spatial awareness by recognizing how shapes could be rotated and arranged.
* Enhanced critical thinking through trial and error and planning before placing pieces.
* Practiced fine motor skills while manipulating and positioning the magnetic tiles.
* Encouraged focus, concentration, and perseverance when completing more challenging designs.
* Built shape recognition and early mathematical concepts by identifying and comparing different geometric shapes.
* Supported creativity and imagination as children discussed the sea creatures they were building and shared ideas with their peers.
* Fostered communication and collaboration as children worked together, offered suggestions, and celebrated one another’s successes.

This engaging hands-on activity combined early STEM learning with imaginative play, allowing children to explore mathematical concepts while having fun with our Under the Sea theme.

✨ Thats a wrap September ✨

September was such a fun and exciting month as we dove into our Dr. Seuss theme! We enjoyed reading so many wonderful stories like The Cat in the Hat, Green Eggs and Ham, One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish, and more. Each book gave us opportunities to explore language, rhyming, colors, counting, and creativity in new ways.

Our activities included hands-on crafts, rhyming games, fine motor projects, and art inspired by Dr. Seuss’s silly characters and worlds. The children practiced early literacy skills, built their imagination, and had lots of chances to problem-solve, work together, and express themselves.

As we wrap up our Dr. Seuss adventures, we’re excited to move into October’s themes! This month we’ll be learning about:

🦃 Thanksgiving and gratitude
🎃 Halloween fun and traditions

We’re looking forward to another month filled with discovery, creativity, and seasonal celebrations!
