On Bear Witness Day, our school division joins communities across Canada in recognizing the importance of fairness, respect, and equity for all children.
This day honours Jordan River Anderson and the legacy of Jordan’s Principle, which affirms that First Nations children should receive the services and supports they need without delay.
As a learning community, we are committed to fostering understanding, compassion, and awareness. Bearing witness means listening, learning, and reflecting on how we can each play a role in supporting the well-being of every child.
We encourage our students, staff, and families to take time on May 10 to learn more, reflect, and stand in support of First Nations children and their rights.

In February of 1991 a private member’s bill was passed in Parliament declaring April 28th a National Day of Mourning. Each year in Canada an average of 1,000 workers are killed on the job and hundreds of thousands of others are either injured or suffer illnesses as a result of workplace related diseases. The National Day of Mourning has been established to mourn for those who died, but also to re-enforce the commitment to continue to fight for a healthy and safe workplace.
SECPSD will support wherever possible the lowering of flags on school buildings on April 28th in recognition of the National Day of Mourning.
