Standing up with someone and grabbing whatever you can get isn’t much of a strategy.

So we give our Advanced Kids + Teens a job.

Find the underhook.

Find the overhook.

Or get to the leg.

Now they’re not just practicing a takedown they’ve memorized.

They’re learning to fight for position, recognize what’s available, react to another person and make decisions while that person is actively trying to stop them.

Nobody is going to stand exactly where you want them to.

The technique matters.

Learning how to create the opportunity for it matters too.

Raechel, Shane and Alan got cleaned up and headed out to celebrate Shaun & Katelyn getting married!

We had an awesome night celebrating you two, and we are really glad we got to be there for it.

Friendships made while trying to strangle each other do extend beyond the gym.

We went apple picking at Pingle’s Farm on Sunday.
Apparently, so did Karma.

One of our favorite things about living and running a business in Ajax is that the people we see on the mats become the people we run into at the grocery store, at local events, and now, in the middle of an apple orchard.

We came for the apples.

We left with apples and a few more pictures with our friends.

Turns out you can leave Karma for the day, but you can’t always get away from the people.

And we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Yesterday, we celebrated two years of Karma with a building full of people we love.

Today, we’re doing a whole lot of nothing with the people who started it all. ❤️

Our hearts are full. Our feet are tired. And we’re still trying to process just how incredible yesterday was.

Feeling grateful for everyone who showed up, helped out, brought food, cheered on the competitors, and made our anniversary something we’ll never forget.

And feeling especially blessed to get to build this life together as a community.

Today, though?

We’re resting.

Two years ago, we got the keys.

The Living Room didn’t have a floor.

The mats weren’t down.

There were tires to lay, plywood to cut, things to build, things to fix and a whole lot of work ahead of us.

We knew what we wanted Karma to be.

But we had no idea what these rooms would eventually hold.

Then you fast forward two years…

And the empty room is full.

Full of kids learning Jiu Jitsu.

Full of young STORM coaches learning how to lead them.

Full of parents, siblings and friends in The Living Room.

Full of people who stay after class just to talk.

Full of moments we couldn’t have pictured when we were standing here with a set of keys and a construction project.

We built the floors.

You filled the room.

Happy 2nd Anniversary, Karma. ❤️🐞

Coaches don’t just happen.

You build them.

During Superheroes, our STORM coaches aren’t standing on the sidelines watching the adults coach or talking to each other.

They’re coaching.

They’re working with small groups of our Superheroes.

Demonstrating.

Giving directions.

Helping.

Encouraging.

Learning how to keep them focused when they have other plans. 😂

Giving them responsibility while also giving them support is important to their growth.

STORM stands for Special Team Of Roll Models.

The goal isn’t to make kids pretend to be coaches.

It’s to give them real opportunities to develop the skills they’ll need to become good ones.

Today they’re helping lead a group of Superheroes.

One day, they may be running the room.
