After teaching for vocal and piano lessons for more than 15 years, Michelle Cuyguan has ample tips to help her students grow and achieve their goals. The first? Vocals and piano go hand in hand.
Michelle has been teaching vocal, piano and music theory since 2001. She is classically trained through the Royal Conservatory of Music and has received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Jazz Vocal Performance at York University.
And while she has been a staple at Durham Music since early 2000, Michelle also keeps busy directing and accompanying several choral groups, serving in church music ministry, singing for private events and public concerts, adjudicated singing contests, as well as taking part in several music productions in Toronto. Last month snapd stopped by and learned the keys to success with piano and voice. Here are some quick facts:
Q. Best age to start piano?
A. It depends on the student. Four-years-old if they are keen and have a parent who plays and can help. Otherwise, six is a common age to start.
Q. Why should someone who wants to sing learn piano?
A. For those looking to better their singing voice - be it in jazz, classical, popular or rock music - knowing how to play piano helps with pitch and tuning your voice.
Q. What's the biggest challenge students face with piano?
A. It's often a technical issue and lies with finger coordination. It takes practice to become comfortable with the movement, and to do it well and efficiently.
Q. What's the best advice you can give someone who wants to learn how to sing?
A. Students often judge their voice, and it takes them accepting it for what it is so they can learn how to face the challenge and become a better singer.
