Today we are highlighting another section from our study guide: Effective Study Techniques

Passive reading and just listening in class will not help you pass complex science or math exams. To truly understand abstract ideas, you must change how you study.

Section two of Master Your Math & Science Exams: The Ultimate Study Skills Guide dives into active learning techniques that actually work:

Master the Basics: Thoroughly understand foundational principles, equations, and definitions before moving on to advanced topics.

Utilize Visualization: Use diagrams, charts, and flowcharts to visually represent relationships and connections between concepts.

Practice Problem-Solving: Solve a wide variety of problems, starting with simple exercises and working up to challenging ones.

Break It Down: Divide complex problems into smaller steps, apply relevant formulas, and check your solutions for accuracy.

64% of Ontario Grade 9 students feel they understand most of the math they're taught. πŸ“Š

Most. Not all.

That gap, the part they don't understand, is where students quietly fall behind. In math especially, missing one concept makes the next one harder. And by the time it shows up on a test, it can feel like the whole subject stopped making sense.

What you can do at home:

After a test or quiz, sit down with your teen and look at the types of mistakes they made. Careless errors are different from concept gaps and concept gaps need to be addressed before moving on.

If your child understands most of their math but not all of it, now is the right time to fill those gaps before they grow.

More than 1 in 3 Ontario Grade 9 students say math is one of their favourite subjects. ⭐

That's actually a gift; a student who genuinely enjoys math is so much easier to support. The challenge is making sure that enthusiasm is matched with the skills and strategies to back it up, especially as the curriculum gets more demanding.

What you can do at home:

If your teen loves math, feed that passion. Let them teach you something they learned. Explaining concepts out loud is one of the most powerful ways to deepen understanding.

And if they love math but are hitting a wall? That's exactly what we're here for.

Half of Ontario Grade 9 students say they actually like math. πŸ“

That's genuinely encouraging because when students enjoy a subject, they're more willing to put in the work. But liking math and understanding math deeply enough to succeed on assessments are two different things.

What you can do at home:

Encourage that interest! Talk about where math shows up in everyday life: money, sports stats, cooking, gaming.

Keeping the curiosity alive outside the classroom makes a real difference.

If your teen likes math but isn't seeing it in their grades, the right support can turn that interest into real results.

Most chemistry students fail because they study wrong.

As a student, I used to spend hours highlighting textbook pages and rewatching lecture videos.

My grades stayed stuck at C+ no matter how many hours I put in.

Then my chemistry tutor told me something that changed everything:

"Stop reading. Start doing."

She explained that chemistry exams test application, not memorization.

Students who practice problems daily finish exams faster and score higher than those who just read and highlight.

Here's what actually works:

πŸ§ͺ Practice 5-10 problems daily (not just on weekends)
🧠 Explain concepts out loud like teaching a 5-year-old
⏰ Study in 25-minute focused blocks with 5-minute breaks
πŸ“ Write every step of your work (partial credit saves grades)
🎯 Focus on understanding why reactions happen, not memorizing lists

The science backs this up. Students using active recall methods improve retention by 34% compared to passive reading.

Chemistry is cumulative. One hour every day beats 10 hours crammed on Saturday.

Your brain consolidates formulas during sleep, not during all-nighters.

I switched to daily problem practice and explaining concepts aloud. My next exam score jumped from 72% to 89%.

The difference? I stopped being a passive consumer and became an active learner.

Which study method do you rely on most? The textbook highlighter or the problem solver?
