On this International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, we reflect on the Komagata Maru tragedy - a painful chapter in Canadian history that speaks directly to the systemic racism faced by South Asian communities in BC.
In 1914, 376 South Asian passengers were denied entry into Canada despite holding British subject status. After two months stranded in Vancouver Harbour with dwindling provisions, they were forced to return to India, where many were imprisoned, beaten, or killed by British colonial authorities. Racial discrimination has never been accidental. It has been legislated, enforced, and institutionalized. Remembering this incident means recognizing that history and committing to the work of doing better.

SASI is proud to support the upcoming Dr. Ambedkar Symposium on Emancipation (ASE 2026) on March 15 - 16. We are honoured to stand alongside the Chetna Association of Canada and our academic partners at Institute for the Humanities at Simon Fraser University and University of British Columbia for this important dialogue. With discussions on “Overcoming Caste Barriers for Social and Economic Equality”, this symposium is a vital space for knowledge exchange, focusing on the ongoing pursuit of social justice and the legacy of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.
We encourage our community to attend the sessions in Vancouver and engage with these critical conversations.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for "Trinjan Mela: International Women's Day Celebration 2026✨"
From vibrant Bhangra and beautiful folk songs to powerful poetry and storytelling, every performance brought the spirit of Trinjan to life. The audience joined in with singing, boliyan, and dancing, making it a truly unforgettable celebration of women and community. The atmosphere was filled with warmth, laughter, and a deep sense of cultural connection as people came together to honour traditions and celebrate the voices of women.
SASI extends its sincere gratitude to the City of Abbotsford, Abby Bhaina Events & Exhibitions, and CIVL Radio for their partnership in bringing this event to life.

“What was your earliest introduction to women’s empowerment?”
The answers? Every story reminded us that empowerment often begins at home. 🤍
