Bakerview Music Academy

Bakerview Music Academy Free El Sistema Style Music Education We believe that music is of great benefit to young people, improving academics, self-discipline and social skills.

At the heart of El Sistema is a simple idea: using the classical music ensemble experience to promote positive social change in youth. Our program runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays in space we rent from the Bakerview Mennonite Brethren Church. Our goal is to make high quality music instruction accessible to children from families who are economically challenged. Thank you to teaching artist Boris Sichon for bringing so many of your incredible instruments to our summer program last week. All of the students enjoyed your lessons and stories of where you got instruments around the world. How quickly a week flew by!

We were fortunate to have teaching artist Boris Sichon join us as an instructor for our Summer Program last week. He brought so many instruments for students to try that—as Ms Heidi told families at the recital—there can’t be room for much else in his home!! 😜 Here are the Hungry Banana Band students improvising music at Friday’s recital.

Many thanks to choral teaching artist Mrs H and pianist Ms Anja for making choir during last week’s summer program so much fun. Aside from engaging warm ups and fun repertoire, your question of the day and singing games were a hit with the students.

After just one week of classes with the excellent instruction of Mr. Mark, our summer program students performed, “Stand By Me” for their families. Some students had never even played ukulele before! Best of all, they played with confidence, enthusiasm, and joy. Well done!!

The classic rock tune, “Smoke on the Water” was a great warm up for our young summer program musicians.
